Motor Swap - Complete!

Really good question. I have no idea. But, given that its Jegs, and there was no mention of having to pick it up somewhere, i assumed it was lift gate service to my house.

Its marked as shipped, but i have no tracking yet. We shall see.

Whats one of these weigh? I'm thinking i remember like 4-500lbs?

Should be light enough to be able to tip up the pallet onto some dollys and roll into the garage.

I got mine from Jegs. They'll ship to your house, someone from the freight company will call you to set up a time. They're still offering free shipping on crate motors, its a good deal. SBC Chevy crated up is going to weigh in the neighborhood of 550 lbs. The truck driver should have a pallet jack.

Sweet, thats what i assumed. Definitely wanted to jump in there with the free GM shipping.

Be carefull of all the ground harnesses. When you get the motor out follow all the ground wire clusters and make sure the connections are in good condition. It is a good time to clean up the wiring. I'll post a picture of how I managed the ground wires.

Hood off, front tires off, Rotella-T and a NAPA 2 qt after brake in, the only thing that I didn't see anyone mention is check/ replace the flex plate... and make sure the torque convertor nuts are "German torque" on install. BMW is a bass ackwards design from an American manufacture, but a chevy will be gravy after he Beemer.:thumb:

Dumb question . Which do you guys prefer at the thermostat housing? O ring around tstat, or paper gasket?

Ive used both in different situations. Is there a correct one for each application? My 94 used the o rings, but my 91 doesn't seem to take them, and i've been using the paper gasket.

Any reason to use one over the other? I've tried it w/o, and not been successful .

I think at least partially it depends on the thermostat housing in regards to the gasket sealing.

Not sure what the TBI motors use, but my thermostat housing is AL. I had to sand the mounting surface of the housing down flat to get it to seal. It was quite substantial how far off of "flat" it was, but couldn't tell how much until I made a few passes over the sandpaper.

Well, motor is confirmed for delivery tomorrow, so I tore into it.

Got the y pipe pulled, radiator, shroud, fan, water pump, alt, PS all out.

Ran into a snag on the A/c compressor. Apparently, to remove the bolts from the brackets, you have to remove the compressor clutch. Bummer. Specialty tool.

Happy to buy it, but didn't have on on hand. Will but the Oreilly POS version and continue forward tomorrow. Starting to realize how big of a project i have ahead, but it still seems do-able.

We'll see!

NO! You dont! The bolts have flats in them to allow them to come out!

You Sir, are a smart man. Just ran out and checked.

Somewhere between not enough light (or not enough beer ), i missed this fact.

Good work. Saved me the cost of the puller, and a trip to the store!

Thanks!

Anyone have tips on a good way to hang the A/C Compressor out of the way?

Looking around, i'm thinking of removing the primary Battery from its tray, and strapping the A/c compressor there.

Obviously, i'm keeping the AC, and have no need ot get it discharged/recharged.

And just cause i ran out and took a pic

Good for reference. That's exactly what i pictured when you said it.

Glad i didn't force them past the clutch like i thought about doing....

I've never had good luck with o-ring housings. I've never had a problem with a gasket.

OK looks like I am a little late to this party, but the only thing I have that I can offer is:
Engine leveler if you want it, and the lift plate if you prefer(that would be the plate that bolts to the intake).
Also any other tools you might need that you don't want to buy.
I know I am a bit far, but I can ship or if I have a load that gets me closer you can meet me.
I was in Tracy a couple of days ago:doah:

Thanks for the offer, man!

So far i think i'm good, but if i end up in a bind i'll let you know.

Truthfully, once i borrowed an engine hoist, the rest of my project specific tools have been cheap. Oil primer and flywheel tool are the only thing's i've bought.
