My 1990 K5 Blazer build

I know you just painted it, but I'd paint that grill silver or something. There is still waaaaaayyyyyy too much black on that thing. Tail lights are a big improvement already!

Should be a VSS 241 like AGM said...

I'm with Trusty, it looks good but it needs something to break it up IMO. My trucks black, and i thought about painting the grill black too, but I kept the stock one and just shined it up a little, and it looks good. Your truck though, I like it either way

I'm really diggin' the blacked out look. I was going back and forth about putting a stock grille on it, but after painting it black I really like it. Makes it look mean. :)

I'm going to pick up some tubing this week to make my cage for it. You guys think 2" or 1.75" is the way to go?

OK, here are my dumb questions for the day. I have never regeared a front axle, so bear with me.

Are the gears for a front axle and a rear axle the same? A friend has a set of new 4.56 gears and install kit for a 8.5" and he said I can have them for $150.

Plus, what is the best weight of gear oil to use? I'm going to change out the rear too.

And fluid capacity of a 10-bolt?

Yes same ratio. And 80-90gear lube. Prolly around 3qts each. You won't be able to just throw in the new gears I don't think. It's a very precision necessary install.

I've done gears in rear axles of cars before, just didn't know if there was some difference in the gears between a front and rear axle. Dumb question, but I've never even thought about regearing a front axle till this truck. Been working on Trans Ams for the last 15 years. :haha:

Oh ok I figured since u didn't know they had to be the same.....

Lol carry on then.

My rear gears are 4.56 already, I need to match them. I just wanted to be sure that the TYPE of gears that go in the rear are the same type of gears that go in the front. :)

It changes with different axles???
Some axles differ front to rear depending on the applications. You can't run standard cut D44 gears in a Ford high pinion reverse cut front axle.

It changes with different axles???

There are two methods for front gearing. Keep the exact same ring and pinion and have the pinion drive the coast side of the ring gear. It's considered to be the weaker, incorrect way to do it, but it's quite common.

The second way is reverse cut gears. These are specific to front diff's, and are usually found in high pinion front diff's. With reverse cut gears the pinion drives the 'drive' side of the ring when going forward.

The 10 bolt does it the easy way...

Oh, I'm taking the truck to a shop on Saturday to have a quote on building the cage.

My birthday is in like two weeks and my wife/parents/in-laws are going to pitch in a little for a cage.

I really want to do it myself, but with work/school/kids I have no time until sometime after May. :(

I think I may have them do a basic "protect the kids' noggins" cage and then next summer do the rest of it myself. I'm itching to try out the tubing bender my grandfather gave me. :)
