My '70 C/10 - The Rat Bastard... [Won't Idle.]

Did the tranny slip into gear and your neutral safety switch is disconnected?

I'd like to hear it actually with good volume... I'm still inclined to think the dizzy is too advanced or retarded, they both make it act that way...

Well... I pulled the plugs.
#8 had the entire porcelain, around the electrode seperated.
As in, it moved freely up and down.
The only thing stopping it from walking into the cylinder, was the metal end.
All of the plugs showed rich,
But I've been running it all kinds of screwy,
So, no shocker there.

What caused the plug to seperate?

At any rate, after they were out it spun faster.
When it spins, it hits the TDC mark at the same tempo as metallicas "of wolf and man",
If that helps:.. :haha:

never seen that... :dunno:

and I install eleventy hundred sets of MR43T's and such a yr... :haha:

I've seen cracked exterior insulators from a cocked socket install mishap here and there...

what kind of plugs?

verify your timing is reasonable now.. TDC, pull the cap and peak at your rotor...

what should I put in next?

AC Delco's..... :haha:

NGK usually has pretty good quality... Scott loves em... we run them in some outboards...

but ALL gas V8's get AC Delco's.. just get a stock plug for that motor and see how they do...

The "stock" plug for this motor, is for different heads.
I bought a set once, and they were much narrower.
Thats how I ended up with the NGK's... They were the only plugs that fit.

Te plug thread is like 13/16" or something wide.

so they require a 13/16 socket, as opposed to 5/8?

hmmmm, what heads are they? this is a 396 bottom end right?

Theyre "148" heads... Not very common, but a few guys have used them on 396's.
From my research, they are 112cc heads that came on 366's, 427's, and something else.
Theyre big-truck heads.

Yes, 396 bottom end.

looks like a medium range plug in AC Delco is a R42XLS
Ill pick a set up.

the 148's are open chamber, different animal...

check the timing, throw some fresh fireplugs in and see what she'll do... :D

First thing in the morning.
Called it a day,today. :D

What should I set the initial timing at?
Thanks for all the help, Paul...

Hey read through your starter issues. I agree with Paul, new plugs may be the key. I have not had a lot of experience with the 5.3 starter, but I can say that My friends boat with a 396 would not crank with that starter. He ended up going with a tilton starter, and it cranked no problem. Text me if it doesnt work tomorrow, maybe I can take a trip down the hill:whistle:

Ill let you know. :pimp:

Hate to say it, but I'd start with close to factory, less than 10*. I know your particular motor is hot and not factory, but adding loads of timing is one more variable to much things up.

My de-hoarding is annoying me now as I used to have a spare stock-style BBC starter or two out in the shed. (Though I imagine Issaam has eleventy billion. Possibly including the one(s) I had. :haha: )

If I even touch another starter, its gonna be the warrantee starter that replaces this one.

Im gonna put it back to 0*, and toss new plugs in it.
Ill adjust it up from there and see what happens.

At least I know my starting and charging circuit has ZERO resistance. :D

Timing's at zero.
New plugs.
Still cranking at ~122rpm.

I'm very close to just giving up.
Everything.... EVERYTHING is right.

Its safe to say, that I f*cking hate this motor, right now.
