My 86 K5 build

Thanks for all the compliments guys. I'm really liking how this thing is coming along. I hope to have some actual updates that are worth a crap with some pics soon. I have been helping my brother get his 78 K5 set up with 1 tons and helping paint it for him. So hopefully in the next couple weeks I can get some tubes built off the abomb and build some sliders too. We shall see

awesome score and some nice additions!

Thanks kellyjohn. I had to do it, because I would be kicking my own a$$ later on in life if I didn't buy it. By the way, your rig is so sick! It's truly worthy of GM of the Month :thumb:

Me and my bro decided to head out for some light wheeling. This was a shake down run for my brother's 78 K5 after doing a 1 ton swap. And it was basically the frist real run for me too. So we headed to Illinois Gulch which is just between Deckers and Woodland Park. Most of all the trails up there are pretty mild. There is one pretty good obstacle called Moab Hill that we played on for a while. With the snow it made it a little more difficult. But overall I was really happy with how the Blazer performed.

On to the pics

Nice pics!

Great to see updated wheeling shots...
Justification for building a very capable rig!
Love it!

I will say that it did feel good to get it on the trail. I've always been wheeling with "stock" rigs where you have to be more careful so you don't break stuff. It was nice to be able to romp on it a little with not much worry of breakage. And with the snow on Moab Hill, you really had to give it to it to make it. It was a good time! :saweet:

Well, I finally got my NP241 installed. I installed a JB Converstions Slip-Yoke Eliminator Kit in it using a 1350 flange in the kit. I didn't take any pics of the install because I did it when I didn't think I would ever do a build thread. But it is a pretty simple straight forward install. JB does a great job with instructions. I went with a 241 over a doubler mainly because of cost and this is a simple bolt in replacement and I can get almost 3 to 1. I know it's an aluminum case, but I plan on building my own beef skid plate for it one day. I ordered a 1350 CV rear driveshaft from Tom Woods and they said it should be here by Friday :pimp:

Got my driveshaft installed. I got it from Tom Woods. It's a full 1-ton 1350 CV with a 3in slip and a flange to mate up to the t-case. Tom Woods is freaking bad a! Everything was perfect to my measurements. This thing rides like a dream now. The CV really reduced a lot of vibs I was getting. I am very happy with it. Merry Christmas to me :pimp:

Alright, I'm not totally done with all of this, but I thought I would post up some pics so I didn't have to post as much after I'm done. My brother's and I have been building some sliders and some tubes off my abomb. Like I said, nothing is fully welded, but once I get it done and on the truck and painted, I'll take some finished pics.

We will then have three tubes that extend off the main tube over to the frame. We decided to then make some brackets that connet the tube to the body supports that way when we try to step on them, it will alleviate bending and flexing as much as possible. I will take pics off all this later once they are on the truck.

And yes, that is a harbor freight welder too :D. Just about everything was done with harbor freight tools. Final welding is done with my brothers 220 welder. I'm not totally done with tubes on the abomb. I plan on connecting some more tubes on the lower part of the abomb up to the main tube and maybe some tubes on the inside part of the abomb and connecting out to the main tube (if that makes any since). If it doesn't, just look at ORD's low profile bumper and see how all their tubes come together, and that's pretty much what I will try to do, but in a modified way. However this will probably wait for a while. It has been freaking cold here and I am sick of cutting tubes in the cold weather. So maybe over the summer I will add these others. What do you guys think so far?

looks good. Now I want a HF tube notcher. Kinker, not so much.

Are you bending tubing or pipe?

It's schedule 40 pipe. My brother and I have done a lot of researching on this stuff, and it seems like everyone just falls into line with whatever they read and will only put DOM on their rig. Now it is true that DOM is the strongest out of everything, but it's also very expensive to purchase and also very expensive to bend considering the bender you need to get to make decent bends. If you get the correct pipe, it is only ~10% weaker overall than DOM, but a fraction of the cost. The key is to think about it before cutting/bending and map out a plan to have good bracings in sections where you are likely to have the most stress/bending if you were to bash it on something.
