My Condensed 5.3 Swap Thread. LSX LQ4 LM7 Vortec Gen III

I have been doing the sleeveless butt connectors and then soldering and shrinking. Is that cool?

Didin't wait for them to pick up monday and dropped it off at post office today.

Well something isn't right still. It runs good, but never goes into closed loop. The o2's just hang at full rich and the fuel trim stays in one spot. I have some screen shots coming later.

I'm really sorry. There's to much going on with this, I should have only done it in person.

Is it running good? Driving good? Then can you read the codes?

If codes only indicate an O2 sensor issue you may have to change them and I'm not sure the correct ones will have the correct plug?

The issue with this is the older OS has no 5.3L equivilent, so it would be very hard to tune, even in person. Just like a cammed built engine, there is no starting point.

I haven't driven it yet. But I will tomorrowwhen iItake it to tthe paint Shop. So far it hadn't come up with any codes. I guess I just thought it would be as simple as copy and pasting the fuel and spark tables from a 5.3 into the ls1 computer. We'll figure out what to do when I get it back from paint.

The OS on yours was differant then any that came with 5.3L. So just copying in some and guessing at some would be... not good.

The newer OS is interchangable and came with a 5.3L, so copying in ALL the paremeters is good!

Now I think we found where differant O2 sensors come into play. Hope that is all it is, if so it will drive fine Open Loop.

How did you connect your factory throttle cable and tv cable to the LS throttle body? Did you fab your own bracket, or did you order one? I'm doing a swap now, and I can't make up my mind what to do at this point.

Mine has a th400 so no tv cable. I used the original 02 5.3 throttle cable bracket and a throttle cable from a 97 tahoe. I did have to bend the peddel a little to get the throw right.

It was a guy on CL. He kinda does this stuff on the side. I wouldnt go that route again. The motor, harness, and ecm cost me an even $1000. But the computer isnt tuned right, the harness is a camaro/truck half breed, i had to run camaro o2 sensors, it didnt have an alternator, and there are a few other issues i cant think of at the moment. If i had to do it all over again, and i had the money, i would get one of the ebay complete take outs. The have EVERYTHING from the doner. All you have to do is get the harness modified, and the computer tuned. IF i didnt have the money, i would get a motor from a local junk yard. Problem is, they come pert near stripped. So you would have to piece it all together.

i got all my 5.3 loaded direct unbolt with 4l60-e 2wd / harnness / alt / starter / mas air flow and box / dbw box and pedel / down pipes with sensors in them just no cats . even a 2wd drive shaft so i could cut it down to fit in my truck .

all was under 100k miles and direct pull out from my local yard for 2200 bucks

if you call local yards call and tell them you plan to do a REpower and you need everything . your not jjust replacing a motor in same vehicle it come from .

i moded my own harnness = easy to do

read more in my 2wd build in my sig line.

Thats the most ideal way to do it. I thought i was getting a deal on mine. but it really didnt work out that way. The flip side is that im only into my swap $1800. But i also only got a motor. THats not including selling off the old 350 and other stuff that was no longer needed.

Here, Mitch, this should make you feel good about your 5.3 swap. My buddy runs a small call lot in Boise and often sends me odos from 5.3 rigs. Many in the high 200k to low 300k range. This one was the most ive seen

Yep. They seem to be 300k mile motors easy. i just read recently that the factory timing chains are validated for 200k miles without needing replacement.
