My full conversion

No progress this weekend other than getting rid of the donor blazer at the scrap yard. It’s a shame that no one wanted what was left of it.

Front shaft showed up today and it’s getting the same paint job as the rear. No need for pictures since it’s the same. Hopefully the weather lets me work on the Jimmy this weekend but the weatherman says there’s a chance of snow so I’ll probably get called into work.

Didnt get called in today so I got a bunch done today. First thing the boy and I did today was put the shims on the front axle.

Cut off bolt holding spring pack together

Old shim vs. new shim

You have to put 2 shims opposing each other on the drivers side so you dont side load the studs

Drivers side done

Passenger side done

Next I cut off the axle perches to rotate the axle to get the driveshaft joint angles right

Found this crap for a shock mount so I decided to make my own and cut this off

One of the old ubolts was cut for some reason,so i replaced it

Perches all welded up and leaf springs torqued down

Made my own shock mounts. Used an worn out cutting wheel that was the same diameter as the perch I cut off for a template

My new shock mounts

Installed

All welded up. Both sides done but no pictures of the other side since it's the same.

Last thing for today. Traction bar cross bar.

Cross mocked up

Ready for welding

Welded

Shackle mount

Shackle mounts and tabs welded up

Cross bar holes drilled and bolted then traction bar installed

Finished.

Touched up the bare metal with some flat black paint (looks glossy now cause I took the photo before it dried lol)

All done

Time to fix this mess. Dropped the skid plate and gas tank. To access the inside of the frame

Got my son working the grinder. Gotta teach him about the importance of doing the job right the first time to avoid alot of grinding lol

Cleaned up the shock mount area

Decided to put a piece of plate inside the frame behind the shock mount

Plug welded the plate from the outside

Shock area cleaned up

Drilled the hole for the shock mount and installed the rear shock brace too. I had to modify the brace to fit since it hits the shackle flip bracket.

Also grinded off all the welds that's was piled up on the frame.

Put the front driveshaft in just to see what it looks like. I gotta swap the ring and pinion soon since I have two different gears sets.

Starting to look like something now.

Since the gas tank was out figured I'd look into it to see why I was having fuel issues

And I'd guess this is the issue. The line is pinched and the picked sock is up for some reason. Easy fix, a new fuel line and were good to go

Thought I was done for the night but decided to mess with the fuel sending unit to see if it was bad or not. So got out my ohm meter.

Empty

Full

I believe the sending unit is fine. So I cleaned up the ground before installing

Heres my fix to the pickup sock. Replaced the hose, cut off the old mounting bracket for the intank pump and clamped it together.

For some reason I just couldn't let the tank sit on the ground so the boy and I put it in with the skid plate.

After installing the tank checked the gauge and wouldn't you know it, it works. Put 5 gallons in her and let her run for 5 minutes or so. So the ground was bad. We were getting ready to call it a night but the boy said "dad what's those lines for?". There were abandoned fuel return line and emissions stuff. So we yanked them outta there since were running a carburetor now and have no need for that stuff. Now the underside is starting to look clean. That's all for now. Gonna try to put exhaust on it next weekend.

Here we go. Started the exhaust tonight.

All laid out. 2 40 series flowmaster, h-pipe kit and summits 3" hot rod exhaust kit.
