My "Official" Stepside Restoration Thread and LS Swap 2021

I see that rough coated spot as a bonus. If the body/fender flex enough to contact there it will be less likely to chip.

Any progress on that 350? Just wonderin... :D

well I got the timing chain in and attempted to do the rear main seal but the ****ty seal I bought at autozone ended up causing more fustration than progress. Honestly whats holding me back on this is $$. I had to spend it all on the body and the remainder on books for school.

But I did go wheeling today!! Had a great time and the front locker makes an awsome difference! I almost ended up sinking again in some deep water and muck but powered right through. I really wish I had a video of that, it was pretty badass. But I had replaced my power steering belt last weekend and I guess it stretched and popped off when I was doing a donut. So I put it back on and it kept popping off so I had to say **** it and cut it. Then drove home with no power steering which was interesting but managable. I just put the old one back on and no problems so far...

I know the feeling. When you're in college there is never enough time or enough $$. I keep telling myself it'll all be over soon though and things will change. ...But then I'll have a hefty student loan to pay off :doah:

Seriously it is impressive that you can do this on your own while being in school/living life :waytogo:. I've got to build a garage first, but then the fun and learning will begin :saweet:

Ya maybe, but so far I've been wheeling twice now with no scratches to speak of. I did get stuck pretty bad today. With all the rain it has made the ground really mucky. As it turns out the muck makes it really hard to see stumps under the water. So today I was following my buddy through a brand new hole that we were testing and he got himself stuck. So I had to go around to yank him and I keep hitting some mounds that wouldn't let me over. So I hit it with more and more speed until I get wedge my front axel up on a stump pretty bad. So now both of us are stuck... Luckily he has a winch and was able to pull himself out and keep going down the mud run. So after trying to high lift myself for about an hour to no success given that the ground isn't solid, I gave up and had my buddy run over some brush to winch me up and over the stump. So after I got over I decided I wasn't going to get stuck again so I gave it the usual equation of 4lo + 3rd gear + 5000rpm = a lot of wheel speed and powered myself right on through the rest. I did bring my camera this time however it died so I couldn't get a video, but I did get a few pics with my cell phone:

Pre-update news

Well I went wheelin last week and just did some nice and easy stuff. I saw a mud/water hole that is usually too intense for me to be dried up so for ****s and giggles I decided to go though it. I quickly learned that it was only dry on the top. The mud underneath was straight poopy mud which makes me very happy to have self cleaning treads :D It ended up giving me a picture perfect mud spray:

Also expect an update in the next few days of the new floor for the bed (finally).

Ok so it has been long enough having no floor in my bed, so I finally decided to do something about it. I decided to go the same route I did before with a single piece of 3/4" pressure treated plywood. Only this time I didn't have to remove the bed. My solution was to attach the last two mounts, then cut the existing wood down to the metal sides, cut the board to fit exactly in the middle and plop it in.

For now I only have the pictures from when I did the mounts:

Here it is as it sat before:

Got to play with my welder and I think my spot welds are definately getting better:

So I decided to use the little bit of rust bullet that i had left on the mounts and the remained on the frame:

Feeding updates to the poor

Well to finish my last update, I did finish the bed floor with a fresh piece of ply wood and a new set of tailgate letters. Also I used up the last of my ****ty Eastwood chassis coat and repainted the bumper, my guess is it lasts till the fall...:

Some more stuff to come:
-Fresh front bumper paint
-Fresh grill trim paint
-New layer of herculiner in the cab
-Trashing the cheesy stainless panels in the bed and herculiner all around
-Cylinder Heads are ordered, so the 355 will be reaching final assembly stage in about 2 weeks or so!
-Also possibly a cowl induction hood later this summer

Enjoy the water beeding up on top of a fresh coat of wax, I love it:

Another update fed to the poor

More progress:

I think this bumper came out far better than the rear bumper. I sanded, spot shot some zinc primer on the bare spots, then I used the urathane primer that I could never get to spray flat because I figured I wanted some texture on the bumper, and then 4 medium coats of rustolium.

Here's a close up:
