My "Official" Stepside Restoration Thread and LS Swap 2021

Also one of the cleanest trucks here! I've always liked this, nice job with the 4500, someday ill find another 4500 for my blazer.

Oh baby I like those speaker brackets. Good find.
I can only imagine how many people have that same goofy ass speaker box tucked behind the back seat.

Do the brackets form a whole enclosure for the speaker or does it end up "free air"?

Nice way to reclaim space with a workshop over the garage.

The sand is never all gone.

The brackets don't totally enclose the cab corners as the factory sheet metal opens up into the B pillar and down to the cab corners. The instructions recommend adding sound deadening and insulation behind them for better sound projection. I also need some rubber trim around the edges to fully seal it and to prevent the metal edges from rubbing.

Nothing wrong with that sand. I make sure to never vacuum it out of mine. I'm close to being able to have one of those little zen gardens and a bonsai tree and tiny rake in there.
I feel like at some point you roll down your window on the highway and then get sandblasted. Derp

Well guys I finally have the NV4500 back in and she's running and driving again!

Slight recap for those of you who lost track:
Pulled the NV4500 out of my truck to have it rebuilt due to bad 2nd and 3rd syncros. While it was out, there were a few things that I "might as well" address that have been bothering me.

1. The chassis of the truck being an '84 SM465 K10 originally came with a flat style transmission cross member. When I did the NV4500 swap, I had to use a 3" square tube adapter on top of tranny mounts to reach the shorter pad on the NV4500. It worked just fine, but it wasn't "right" in my head. So I updated to a '85+ "W" style cross member. This required a different tranny mount and 3 new holes had to be drilled in the frame, but otherwise it all bolted right up without issue. The "W" style cross member also gave me a lot more room around my front driveshaft. With the flat cross member, I had to grind some clearance into it for the CV joint. Now I just need to find another t-case skid plate for the "W" style cross member as the flat style is different.

2. I always hated the speaker box that was behind the seat. It rubbed on the back of the bench and muffled the speakers. You can see in my last update a link to the speaker brackets and how I fit them up. Since then, I've painted them to match, installed some sound deadening, and some rubber trim on the edges so they don't rub metal to metal.
I also ran the wire up to the dome light before I sealed in the cab corners.

3. Dome Light!
In the 14 years or so that I've owned this truck, it's never had a working dome light. I am so happy that I finally got around to wiring it in. It's only wired to the dimmer switch, but hey something is better than nothing. It's the little things am I right? (Unfortunately I misplaced the lens :doah:)

4. When I did the body off resto and NV4500 swap, I used a universal rubber shifter boot for the trans and a boot off of a 205 application in place of the plastic 208 shifter. The boot rings overlapped and the rubber didn't quite fit perfect so it's always bothered me. A little while back I ordered up some universal Lokar vinyl shifter boots and they've been sitting in a box for far too long so I finally got around to installing them. The key piece though is the boot trim ring that I had custom machined for this. (Looking back though, I'm pretty sure Mr. Magoo must have taken the measurements as not all the holes lined up but it was close so I made it work).
So here's what I started with:

Here's the end result:
The t-case boot still needs some tweaking to get it just right but since it has such a long throw from 2hi to 4lo it's not as easy as it looks.
