My "Official" Stepside Restoration Thread and LS Swap 2021

How pricy were the headers to get an engine in return!

5.3 and turbo will be a fun combo in your truck.
They were top of the line Kooks Headers ceramic coated and y pipe with high flow cats. These would be close to $1700 new but I welded all the seems and it had a bunch of rock chips and scratches in the coating. Plus the cats were starting to smell. Either way we both walked away from the deal happy.

Get new headers for the truck?
Ya for my Silverado. I installed a set of Speed Engineering headers and you know for being a 1/4 of the price they fit nicer, plug access is better, and the y-pipe tucks up higher and doesn't hang beneath the frame. Best of all the intermittent ticking I'd get with the Kooks is gone!

Just caught up on this thread from the last time I posted in here a few years ago. I am not a fan of the GEN III swap, but it's not my truck. Going to at least paint it orange?

Pretty sure I'll paint the timing cover, valley cover, and valve covers Chevy Orange but undecided on the block and heads. Might leave them bare or use aluminum paint or do the whole thing orange.

What makes you not happy with my choice? Not a fan of LS engines? Or not a fan of my particular choice of 5.3L?

Your truck is too cool for an LS. A big block would be an upgrade in the cool factor, an LS is a down grade.

There is no denying they are good engines, but it feels like throwing in the towel!!! Might as well swap in an automatic while you are at it! Just giving you a hard time.

I guess it really depends on your school of thought. I think an LS is a cool factor upgrade while big blocks don't really excite me. To each their own.

Have you every been in a legit big block? Like a legit 600hp big block? Not being a prick just asking. Many people have never had a ride in one that wasn't a peanut port or smogger junk.

Not saying 600hp big blocks aren't good. But he wasn't soliciting answers to the question what should I replace my small block with? He's already got the LS. Decision made.

It isn't my truck or anybody else's. It's his. If he wants to stuff a LS in its not our place to tell him to put something else it. That is unless someone is going to pony up the funds for that 600 hp big block for him.

Plus less not forget the intended purpose of his truck. Light off roading, some dunes action once a summer and some road time too. (I'm guessing only on what I've seen in this thread) Does he need a big block for that? Some could say for dunes having a all aluminum small block might be better than a cast iron fat block for suspension and handling.

He's gonna have fun regardless.

I was just giving him a hard time. It will still be a cool truck when he is done. Just different.

What, I can't ask the guy a question?

He said that big blocks don't excite him. I asked him why. I was not implying that he need to sell the LS or anything else. Granted I asked him before About his thought process before.
But....we are past that...
In fact I told him I thought the L33 was a great starting point. Don't put words in my mouth Rob.
Two unrelated things going on here.

Guys settle down. Me doing an LS swap should be the least surprising news, I've only been talking about doing one for years now.

I know Martin was just messing around, no offense taken.

If anyone is truly unhappy with my choices, kindly unsubscribe. Thank you.

Where is this unsubscribe button???

Just kidding, I’ll admire it with the GEN III small block too.

That being said, I took a few year hiatus, so I was very surprised!!!

Sorry I offended you. I obviously misunderstood your intentions by your post. I'll refrain from distracting this thread any further.

Carry on boys.

Have you decided on a cam & spring package yet?
I've narrowed it down to 3 possible
1. Summit Stage 2 Truck cam:
218/227 duration, 0.523"/0.524" lift, and 112 LSA
2. Elgin "Sloppy Stage 1" (or Stage 1.5 depending on who you ask) 1839-P
220/224 duration, 0.575"/0.575" lift, and 112 LSA
3. Elgin Sloppy Stage 2 1840-P
228/230 duration, 0.585"/0.585" lift, and 112 LSA

The summit cam is winning in my head currently although the Elgin Sloppy Stage 1 is very close to it. Closer duration split but higher lift. It's probably a wash power wise but the Summit may have a tamer lobe design that's better for long term valve train reliability. However, not that that really matters as I'd never see the kind of miles where it would make a difference. Both cams have stronger bottom ends with gains up to 6500rpm.

The Sloppy Stage 2 is interesting to me as it's now the default cam for most budget LS stuff. It supposedly gains power everywhere including the bottom end but I have seen some conflicting reviews of the bottom end gains. This is a graph right from Sloppy Mechanics from a stock 4.8 and it gained 102hp while still gaining slightly down low and that's on a the smaller 4.8! I'd think the 5.3 with the longer stroke would be better down low.
The tradeoffs are that idle would be a bit rougher and could be slightly harder to tune but there's plenty of people on the internet that have tuned this cam to behave pretty well.

Your just cam swapping or are you doing other things to it?
