My son's build. '72 Chevy

He found a '67 at another orchard that has bucket seats, 327 and an auto trans. It's in rather rough condition , but he thinks that since it isn't a high option truck that he should buy it for a turbo 6.0 build in the future. My wife is telling me that I gave him my illness. .. I don't understand!
 
Do you know what those had for torque?

Here's the specs on most of the GMC "big V6's"..there was also a gas 637 V8 engine used in some larger GMC's,the school busses we had back in the 70's at the vocational school had some in their fleet !..they looked like 454's on steriods and had some mean torque..https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GMC_V6_engine

400ish. The reason i brought the v-6 up is i was curious knowing that these engines are not as popular---parts nowhere near as easy/cheap/fast to get as a small block or LS, would you then be as sentimental?

Remember theoretically the gmc 67-72 is pretty much the same looks wise as a chevy.

GMC also had a 702 inch v-12........nevermind diesel4me already posted, but we're getting off topic.......

P.S. i love the whole gmc 6 line too, but they eat gas.

Yeah, I have had a couple of 67-72 GMC 's over the years. I just never kept one to build since I already had at least one of my old Chevy trucks built up at least part way. And like I said, I have never driven or even owned an old V6, so I don't know how I would feel. I know that the small block stuff is more common, but I like the fact that this one has so much of the original stuff still there after all these years and even getting swapped to 4x4. Plus me being around the truck it's whole life...
 
Oh , what's this off topic statement? LMAO! I enjoy all the side info and comments. I understand why you want to have a 4.3, but while I agree that they are a neat engine, I don't want one in anything too heavy. We had a '95 S blazer with one and I loved it. I have a company truck that is a '95 C1500. I don't like it in that truck. Granted the EFI is not the same between the 2, but at this elevation, the truck doesn't have enough power to get moving around town with auto trans and A/C. It only gets 12-14 mpg. And I have to watch merging into traffic sometimes. My '95 K2500 has a 350/ 5 speed and does 14-15 and can at least get moving some better. I know that the 2 trucks are not the same as far as gears and such. I just prefer a little more power to weight ratio in my personal stuff.
But I don't think that I would want to swap out an old V6 out of an old GMC, as I prefer that some modifications are reserved for more common trucks.

This website has a ton of good info on all of the GMC V6 and V12 motors. From what I remember, making the 478 work in a pickup is a hassle but the 401 is bolt in and go deal.
 
So I have a very late update

He has torn most of the rusted metal off of the cab. It has been somewhat intimidating for me and I presume flat scary for him!

He cleaned more and removed seam sealer, then while it stood on the firewall, he sprayed rust encapsulation stuff in between the roof panels. We braced it up hopefully enough, and took it to sandblasting. We got it back today.

I guess that I don't have a picture of the cab floor before blasting. I have never had one torn down this far. I know that the guys back east will laugh, but it's a little scary. He pulled the whole rear cab support off of the floor. He kept going to get all of the rust out from between as much as he could.

I have to tell you guys about the man who did the blasting. I use them for the trucks at my work, so I have a good relationship with them. Well Robert is from back east, I believe Boston. He is ex military, a Patriots fan in Bronco country, and a HELL of a guy!

My son to him how much he had to spend on blasting. Normal rate would have been $700 for what they did, but he told him that he would do what he could for the $300 that my son had for blasting.

He did the whole thing and asked him to remember it when he got older and found a young man who could use some help with something. Pay it forward. ..

My son did me proud and shook his hand and said yes, and thank you.
 
So I gave him a lesson on primer today. Unfortunately for him, the paint gurus said he should use gray under his color combination, so he had a big challenge in the dark dam shop that I work in. But he did a great job of finding a way to get it covered in epoxy. We did have to use a crude brush technique on part of the floor braces.
We also put a 90* on the small blaster at the shop to get where the big one wouldn't.
That small bit made him appreciate what the professional had done for him!

Hopefully you keep with the pictures. Very few builds on this site go ground up, so all the work involved is interesting to see
 
Well I will tell you that have have not been stellar with pictures of my trucks, and posting them is REALLY out of my norm!
But I am trying to since you said something to me about the K5.

Well I wish that the top was still white!

So I better get some more pictures out as requested, so I hope that you can see why he pulled the rear floor support clear out. There was rust coming up through the floor below the gas tank. When he cut some out, he found the thick layer in between.
