My Sub is stranded in the dunes!

Obviously he didn't get what he wanted and kept it. He then got in a motorcycle crash and needed money a year later, and that's how I got it. I'm curious what he was asking for when you saw the ad a year before I picked it up. Was this on the Bay Area CL, the PO is from the bay but goes to school down in SLO, and that's where I saw it.

This was on the Bay Area CL. I didn't save the ad, and I don't remember the price he was asking. I remember it because I liked the stance, but I worried that those tires were a little big for those axles. But I sure like the truck. I also remember thinking that it was nice he did crossover, and thought about it on my 3/4 ton, but decided that was a lot of work on a D44, and I would just put in a D60 and do it then.

Nice looking rig, tho!

good to hear ya got it out and in one piece we are planing a trip up ther ill let ya know maybe we can meet up and try not to break or get stuck.
 
it was really convenient, the wind had nicely removed by his tires as they dug straight down and the misty, overcast, calm day had compacted and firmed up the sand, easing the ordeal we had envisioned into nothing more than an uneventful excursion on a weekday afternoon.

his rig was not touched, there werent even vehicle tracks anywhere near, i almost doubt anyone has seen it as it was in a bit of a hollow .

all in all a rather pleasant experience and quite contrary to the hell i had come prepared for


****edit**** i know Mike has some pictures of the way it looked when we arrived.
 
yeah i pretty much wouldnt leave my truck if it was stuck.. all the spots around here it would be smashed and set on fire in 1hour...
 
Glad to hear that you made it out. Gotta love the Central Coast. Not much thieves around here. PM me if it ever happens again. I live 1 mile from the Pier Ave. entrance and know the dunes very well. Of course I don't go out there much anymore. It got old for me.....doesn't get the heart pumping anymore. Funny though, on the 3rd I had to do an offroad recovery at the dunes at 11pm to help out a friend.

The wind actually blew a good amount of the sand out of the way, and the sand was a lot more firm 2 days later (when these pics were taken).

We tried to tow me out with the Titan at first, but he just dug his tires. It does have a locking diffs from the factory(not sure if it's both or just rear).

At first we tried to tow me up this hill with not much speed and didn't get anywhere. I backed up a few hundred yards and got some gravity on my side, then I charged this hill right by where the 2 trucks are. Once I was over this I was home free. Momentum is your friend! It was really easy to get out once I was moving, but with only 2WD and a 6500lb rig I wasn't going anywhere without a tug.

No offense but when you air down that should have been cake. I run 4 psi in the dunes, and can climb way steeper hills then that in 2wd. With those TSL's you should have been able to walk all over at a low pressure, what PSI were you running?
 
I think that blazer would have gotten you out of there with a good tug.

None taken, right by my avatar it says 4x4 n00b for a reason. :crazy: I was at 10psi. I don't want to go any lower than that, as 16.5s are notorious for blowing a bead. Also, the day I got stuck, the sand was a lot lighter, so I was just digging. In the pics I posted it had been sitting for 2 days, and the sand was a lot more compacted, and the wind had blown quite a bit of the light stuff away.
 
I usually run 4 in the rear and 8 in the front. But as long as you had the ballooning effect in your tires should have been fine. I first learned about air pressure when a stock explorer was going up the biggest hill without hesitation at only 15 mph. I asked if he had any lockers or anything he said no just run at 2-4psi. I was trying the same line at 45 with 12 psi and couldn't make it in my rear locked blazer on 35's :(
 
My TSL's don't hardly bulge at 10 psi. Horrible traction at 10 psi for me at the beach. I hear ya about the 16.5 tires and not wanting to blow a bead. I run 3-4 rear and 5-6 front, could go lower if I wanted because I've got 15" beadlocks, but try to keep some side hilling ability with such tall side walls. Air pressure is everything at Pismo.
 
Yeah, you couldn't tell the tires were aired down at all from looking at them at 10#. They're load range E rated, and I think they have some ridiculously thick sidealls. Sounds like your 42s do too.
 
Hey, Slo c5, nice truck. Glad you got it out intact. I have a 91 Burb that I am building to replace my rusted ( Ohio ) 81 burb. What kind of rims are you running. I have bought 37 inch BFGs that need 17 inch wheels, but I can't find any I like that are 10 inch wide.

Glad to hear you got your burb outta there. I love the way site members are willing to help out. Wish I lived closer to at least a few members for these reasons. If I get stuck here the majority of rigs are Jeeps which usually dont stand much of a chance getting me out. If that was left on a trail around here it would be burnt no doubt so if we have these problems someone ends up sleeping there.
