Name this winch??? Rebuilding a Vic Hickey Sidewinder

It's hard to tell the size of that but it almost looks like you may be able to find a starter motor as a replacement.

Does that motor not come apart at all?

They do ,But i'm going to get Colby to take it to school and see if his teacher would be interested!?

If not Dan knows a guy in Lacombe that is real good.

You aren't set up for it are you?

Thank you! And will do!

Right on!
That's why i posted the manual and like @ZooMad75 said taking pics.

No, I just have a Miller 135...

Haven't tried yet... looks to be the same size as a Chev starter though.... might be able to do some swapping? :dunno:

My 8,000 Ramsey that's hiding in the shed is an old model and is identical to a GM starter except for no Bendix or solenoid. I need to get it out and go through it also

Eighty bucks isn't bad, though you have the whole customs/tax thing since you're in the GWN.

When I got my old Ramsey, I had a local starter/alternator place rewind it, cost about that. If you have anybody local who still does auto electrical, it's an option.

Yeah it's not very cost effective for me to order anything from the US.

I still need to pull the motor apart maybe it's not so bad....or it's totally Focked! :haha:

There is a good place nearby that rebuilds all our farm starters alts

Had some trouble getting this Drum shaft out.

Turns out it was just needing a bigger hammer to get the job done.

Here is a exploded pic of it... The allen screw holds the flat stock to the shaft, that serves as the locking freewheeling portion of the winch.

Still trying to figure out how to get this shaft and bearing out.. the bearing is quite rusty.
i have been working it with solvent and oil, It is much better. I may leave it alone? I don't want to destroy the housing it's in by just trying to pull it out.

What's on the otherside of that bearing? Are there any snaprings?

No snaprings I can see. I think It is just pressed it to the housing, the otherside is just the housing solid aluminum.
I tried prying it out yesterday but got scared. I cant even get the gear and shaft to move at all.

I mean in and out of the bearing, it turns ok. just a bit rough.

I`ve see pics of one guy that had it out and replaced that bearing!? He didn`t mention how it came apart. I seen another guy trying to fix his sidewinder and was having trouble with that same bearing, but I don't think he got an answer and now I can`t find it.

Is the end of that shaft tapped?

Might try a slide hammer

Im under the impression that bearing is press in. See #48-49 on the transfer case diagram

Heat wouldn't hurt anything.

There is a couple of seals near that bearing. A heat gun might be ok, But I don`t have one.

I was thinking the opposite. Liquid nitrogen!

Great minds! I thoughts of that as well. That shaft is not tapped, checked that out. Maybe I can get under it with a slide hammer?
I got a few other ideas too...we will see.

That is cool! I’ve never seen pictures of a Sidewinder taken apart before. I’ve had one on my K10 for about 10 years or so and never had a problem with it nor have I ran into a winch job that it wouldn’t do (yet). The winch cable is tiny though and very short. Someday I would like to replace the little 5/16 wire cable with some bigger synthetic winch rope. Ironically, the Sidewinder on my truck has pretty much been in the family since new as my dad’s best buddy had it dealer installed on his K20 back in 1978. Around 2005 or so he called one day and asked if I wanted that “old little winch”. I said, heck ya! Its been on my truck ever since.

The funny thing the Sidewinder ALWAYS works. Can’t say that for the Schittybilt XRC10 mounted on the rear bumper. That POS XRC10 never works and needs a new relay pack every time you need to use it. Last time I retrofitted a different brand of solenoid box to run the XRC10 and so far so good but yet a 39 year old Sidewinder hasn’t ever been opened up or any pieces replaced. It’s all original.

I’ll be watching this thread for future reference!

I remember going to pick up the sidewinder. The guy had it under his bench in a little garage. If I remember it was a dirty pig.

I was kind of hoping you were the guy to ask what to lube this thing up with after I got it all fixed up. Lol!
Your old posts come up a lot when I search up info for the sidewinder, and one of the main reasons I decided to spent time on it. I love the history of yours and that you still have and use it. Also as you said it always works!

Progress will be slow as I work on it when I got time and feel like it. But glad you are watching! Any pictures you would like now is a great time to ask. It is as far as apart as it can get right now.

One thing I would like to see is how they are mounted to a k truck, I seen your pictures of the front mount... is that it? I was wondering if there is something further back to support the back of the winch?

BTW everyone has mentioned that the ring gear is aluminum. This one is brass with a cast center.

I have a set of PDF installation instructions and wiring instructions. I can email both of them to you if you would like them. Let’s see if the pictures come through that I used the Snipping Tool to copy. As far as oil, I’ve always used 89W/90 but it looks like the instructions say to use a straight 140W. Not sure if you can even buy that anymore.

Let’s see if this works. If not, email me and I will email you the PDF’s. [email protected]
