New Ride! 78 GMC. *The build thread that never was?*

Glad they got to you, sorry it took so long for me to drop them in the mail.

Martin

Don'tworry aabout it! I'm just excited to have them! It was my motivation to finally haul that garbage to the dump! Can't very well justify swapping tires around if I still have a bed full of trash!

I exceeded my photobucket bandwidth for the month. They will come back on e the 1st. I have been doinga little work to it tho! Started painting the white stripe and and I'm going to install my tilt column and new body mounts. More pics aafter the first!

It'sa ppain posting pics from my phone without photobucket! I have about 10 pics I wanna add that will have to wait till the 1st because I exceeded my bandwidth!

I don't think so. The 77 was. Perhaps your thinking of that? I don't know if this has ever been on cl.

Anyway, heres some none too interesting pics of my non-build.

Load of yard debris.

At the yard debris place.

The truck in its parking spot. Just thought it looked good this day.

Closer.

Traded places with the new truck for a few days.

Then i started painting. Taking not too much care, but just enough. I wasnt going for ultra high quality. I just wanted it to look less crappy for a couple years.

Heres a close up before shot. And yes, the truck was "clean" in these pics.

Started with the fender,

Then decided to include the door.

First coat of white on.

And the forward section completed.

Next day i started on the bed portion.

And the whole driver side complete.

And thats about it. I'll keep going on the tailgate/cab/and pass side as the weather clears up this week. THen, im going to put in my new cab mounts and tilt steering column.

Thanks and thanks! I still have big plans for it. I dont think i'll ever sell it. Its just easy to have the idea to sell it while i dont have a proper shop and minimal moneys.

My plan for the truck has changed about elevnty billion times, but my current thoughts are, Buying new (good used) sheet metal piece by piece, getting them properly prepped and primed slowly. And as soon as i have a complete truck worth of new metal, paint it all. In original colors of course. At around the same time, im going to do either a 6.0 or possibly an 8.1. Either way it will get a 4l80e.

Also going to do the 2" ez ride lift up front but out back im thinking 63's with a zero lift shackle flip from TNA with air bags and rear sway bar. Going for the smoothest possible ride without sacrificing driveabilty or load capacity. I also want to buy a utility trailer and put a canopy on the truck. This way, i can use the back for the dogs/gear and it can stay clean back there.

The end goal is to create a truck that looks incredible (not overly "nice", just very cool looking. But still pretty nice! About as nice as the burb. Think, expensive maaco paint job...) and that is very pleasant to drive. Very. This way, i'll actually drive it!

When i do the 6.0, i also want to completely rewire it with a aftermarket/late model fuse/relay block under the hood instead of under the dash. Im also going to do very extensive sound deadening. I will use spray on deadner anywhere where it wont look out of place. And something like dynomat everywhere it can be stuffed. I want it to be a very enjoyable ride, as i mentioned, so that i will actually drive it and use it for more than just yard debris runs. I want to use it for fun stuff like going to the river, camping, cruising, etc.

I still plan on running the white steel wheels and the chrome 67-72 GMC hub caps. Im still not 100% sure on tires, although im leaning towards 285/75-16 BFG Muds.

Im really curious to see what i do with the exhaust. Im really into quite exhaust lately but i dont want it to sound stupid. My '12 sounds perfect to me, but it was triple cats. im worried about what it would sound like with out the cats. But i think something like a stock late model exhaust sans cats would be cool. I also had a sweet harebrained idea that i would run dual exhaust with two factory late model mufflers. Maybe that wouldn't sound stupid. Hard to say. If nothing else, i will do dual long glass packs with a H pipe. Should sound very awesome but actually relatively tame.

Anyway, the moral of the sotry is i want this to transform into something that rivals the convince and nice-to-driveness of the '12, but still being a bad ass of an old truck.
