Just find the numbers on the ring gear that will tell you 2:73 is really low or high depends on how you say it 3:08 is the highest I have heard of in a truck. Were the rub marks in the oil or in the metal

rub marks are engraved in the metal. you can clearly see every tooth rub from the pinion.

Yeah just put it back together and look for another set of axles I'm guessing the front is a 10 bolt, a dana 44 has the same 10 bolts but the side bolts are vertical to each other instead of round.

Just go and find a matching set of a 44 and a 14bolt FF and swap them in

yeah i need to find a new rear end!! hopefully mountainexplorer will get back to me sometime soon. went to the junkyard and found a 3/4 14BFF with 4:10 gears, they wanted 500 for it!!

I had 2.73's with 35 inch tires and a 350/700R4. it was a dog. I got a set of 3/4 tons with 4.56 gears and it had tons of power.

sweet...nice to hear how well it improved...now I just need to find it...no way I'm spendin 500 at the junkyard...although the pull it yourself lot said they would throw in a dana44 for 750...what do you think? don't have the money but could save up to it.

thank you I was hoping you would tell me that...but good news...got an e-mail from allan little while ago...we are talking about a 3/4 ton 14BFF 4:10 and also a 1 ton 14BFF 4:10...think I should build a tank with the 1 ton or is that wasted wieght?

The only difference between the 3/4 and 1 ton 14BFF is the location of the spring and shock mounts. The 3/4 ton will bolt right into a 1/2 ton, whereas the 1-ton will require cutting off the shock and spring mounts and welding on new ones.

sounds like the 1 ton then would weaken instead of strengthening the truck! especially for me seeing as my welding skills are pretty limited without a welder!!

yeah its very hard to weld without a welder! although i have seen it done with a welding stick pair of jumper cables and 2 batteries:D

Nice... My dad used to weld with a butter knife while trying to solve any electrical problem in the house :haha: . Problem was he would not stick to one butter knife....:rotfl:. I think all our knives had welding marks on them...:doah:

well I got my carb today...it came from a buddy who had one lyin around in his dad's garage. I brought it home and immediately tore it apart to clean it and rebuild the damn thing. From the outside they look almost identical..but theres a small difference inside...old one has an additional chamber in the fuel cell..nothing in the chamber but a plastice filler...don't know what it was for but my damn rebuild kit won't work so I am headin down to schucks to try and find a new kit!

yeah...mine is an 80 Q Jet (believe the model was M4ME??) and this new one is an older model...not sure what model but it came off a 72. I didn't know what year it was when I started. Tell you the truth when I got the second one the first was already tore apart and from my recollection they looked identical...Close enough anyway for me not to think about it carefully. In hindsight obviously mine was electric choke mounted on the carb housing, the new one is manual choke. don't know if that explains the extra chamber or not? But besides that I went to schucks got a new rebuild kit now I have the second one all back together and most the way on. I am trying to figure out how to run vacuum lines and linkage. All the linkage works except the damn choke!! a little frustrated over it but going to go back out in a minute and figure it out.

All of this crap because I got to thorough (careless) cleaning the first one. DAMN!!! I might just forget about it and find a lower manifold to replace my broken one!! pic of the only piece I need.....I busted the screws off when taking out the butterflies..and my local junkyard isn't very friendly when it comes to looking for odd pieces such as that.
