Newbie swapping 350s, need tips, advice, warnings!

it SEEMS like I have most of them worked out.. This oil leak has me baffled, and disappointed. One quart leaked in about a hundred miles. Clear oil is hard to track down too!

Eh, I put my motor in and I think the aftermarket oil pan allows some leaking. One piece rear main is supposed to fix all that. Grr. One quart in a hundred miles should be easy to track down. No oil dripping on driveway?

Actually LOTS of oil dripping in the driveway. And lots of oil underneath, just hard to pinpoint so far. Paint is shiny and so is the oil. Little bit of oil on one of the oil pan bolts, bunches on the starter, and bunches dripping off the bell housing. Gravity, you know.

Did you put the gasket on for the distributator to intake? That will push oil out and down the bellhousing.

Look in the area of the oil pressure sending unit fitting. If you did not screw every thing in tight enough, oil will come out of it.

When the engine is cold you should be able to reach any of the "hidden" spots by hand from up top to see if there is any evidence of leaking.

I bought one of those flexible inspection cameras off ebay for this reason (they are dirt cheap), but ended up not needing it. On the starter would have me looking up higher, such as the valve cover gasket on that side. Also make sure the intake isn't leaking off the back side where it meets the block.

All good suggestions thus far. I'd just start up top and see where you can reach that your hand comes back oily.

The corners of the intakes "China walls" is a hot spot for leaks. Skip the rubber BS gaskets they give you and RTV those areas.

update:
well ladies and gentlemen... it appears from all indicators that my problem is the rear main. [sigh]

So, onward to the fixing of that. I may wait for the weather to cooperate, but I was really hoping to drive this old gal over the winter.

(hands up in frustration with myself, I WAS advised to replace the rear main.)

Wasn't this a rebuild engine? Rear main should've been replaced...

If it is a two piece rear seal, it may leak forever... they leaked from the factory...

Perhaps it is only the "smile" gasket on the oil pan leaking, not the rear main itself..if your lucky..
I have slowed a few leaky rear main seals down to a bearable level by adding a pint of brake fluid to the motor oil on some of my old clunkers I had back in the day...went from losing a quart a day just driving to work and home 10 miles,to once a week after 250 miles on longer trips..basically the "stop leak" stuff is mainly the same as brake fluid at a higher price..

right... that's what I said to myself. (but I didnt do the rebuild) so. (as my friend cap'n jack sparrow would say) yarrrrrrr.

On the bright side, I am pretty sure its a two piece seal.

Nobody answered yet, but the reason you pull the dizzy, is because unlike an intelligently designed engine, such as a Ford, GM put the dizzy in the back.
Which means that it is the first thing to get crunched on the firewall as you are pulling the engine out, and the last thing to go bye bye when you are putting the engine in.

Of course, to avoid unpleasant surprises, make sure to plug the hole well when you take it out. A good rag is fine, JB Weld is overkill and will get you talked about.
Who was on watch when this guy got through the gate!?

Hijack on:

I wouldn't use "lovely" to describe it, but to each his own.

Understand this, I've enjoyed this thread from the beginning, as with all that is written here. Sometimes a thread will get off track or a silly comment made. And since you've been registered since the end of October, I assumed you would know this. Don't let a little off the wall humor get under your skin. Go with it. Have some fun. :thumb:

Besides, it gets your post count higher. :screwy:

Hijack off.....continue.

LOL

Sometimes I can be extra "down to business". ADHD OCD kind of thing.

new perspective can be a good thing.

cheers

Part of this line would make a great signature.:D

But seriously, I have oil leaks too. Not to bad but can't quite identify whether it's valve covers, rear of the intake, heads, all of the above. Previous owner ran synthetic. Hoping now that I got some good ol regular Castrol in there maybe some them leaks will become true to Chevy form and fix themselves. Not to worried about it either way. Cause I'd feel better with a rebuild anyway.
