Next up...6.0L

Jesus Christ I paid 1100 less for a complete running, driving, rolled over truck with a 6.0/4l80e. I need to get into the used LS motor business for that kind of money.

Is going to the salvage yard and finding your own out of the question? Thats way too much money.

Congratulations. I'll be going this route though, thanks.

It's worth a few extra bucks for me to have a known good, tuned engine show up on my doorstep ready to be installed. To each his own.

I got to drive mine before hand, not just hear it run on a stand for a few minutes. He's just pulling them out of the salvage yard and tuning them, then selling them for probably double what he paid for them. I dont see how its any different than getting your own and having it tuned. Its your money, it would be worth the legwork to save a grand plus for me.

You'll love the 6.0 power. My stock one has no problem burning off my 38.5 boggers. My old TBI383 wouldnt even think about it.

No offense but you are the exception to the rule so there is no reason to shoot down somebody for paying market value for something they want. People dont just find $2000 complete rigs that they can drive around before they buy it. Thats just not the real world. Might happen to a couple of the luckyest few like yourself, but for everybody else, the 6.0's go for right around $800-$1200 from the junk yards depending on millage. Ususally that doesnt include harness and ecm. So in reality, LOTS of folks are willing to pay a few extra bucks to have this guy go get them from the yard, tune the computer, rework the harness, and test run them up to temp on a stand and enev go so far as to video tape the engine running.

As far as the power of the 6.0L, I can't wait. It will definitely get the tires going a lot better than the 350 currently does.

Cruz89K5, what'd you do for motor mounts in your setup? I haven't really looked too hard to see what's available off the shelf, so I haven't decided if I'll go that route or if I'll just make my own. It also dawned on me tonight that I'm not sure if my Suburban will fit in my shop at my new place (should close on the new house Friday). Oops. If not, hopefully if I put the stock tires on it I can squeeze it in there.

No offense taken. It wasnt my intention to shoot anyone down, and I offer my sincerest apology to you sir if it came across as condescending. A lot of emotion is lost in text I suppose. $1800 was the top dollar amount I was going to spend on an LQ4. I found the entire truck for around that price. I was just hoping to illustrate that deals were out there. I hate to see anyone spend more money that they have to, especially a member of the brotherhood.

I ended up doing a cab swap on the rollover and SASing it with my K5 stuff. I bought dirty dingo mounts initially. They are supposed to clear the stock truck pan.

Again, I apologize if I came across as a jerk, it wasnt my intention at all.

But the LQ9 is just a little bit more....:haha:

What trans are you going to run?

My biggest challenge is controlling my 4l80e. Gotta call them up. Thinking i'll be restricted to a motor that was coupled to a 4l80e originally.

Screw it. If I'm going to drop $3000 on an engine, there's no reason to stick it in front of anything but the best. So...I think I'll go with the 4L80E.

That being said, I should be able to bolt my stock t-case right to that, correct? Aren't the TH400 and the 4L80E physically the same (case wise)?

The next question would probably be, "Why not then also go with the t-case from a donor, too?" I guess I have to stop somewhere and I really, really don't want an electronic t-case. And frankly if it's one less thing to change, then that's just that much better.

y5mgisi...holy cow! Just spent the last 3 hours or so reading you build thread. Nice!!

LOL awesome! Thanks! Quite a bit of good info in there! Also, the 4l80e is a little bit longer then the th400 so you would have to address the drivelines. Should be easy enough to just find a parting out burb that came with the 4l80e and use its drivelines.

Well crap. That's not what I was wanting to hear! Thanks for the heads up though...the research continues!

I guess it also wouldn't be too big of a deal to have my driveshafts modified to fit the new set up. Had to do that in my YJ after the 4.3 swap.

Also, I wonder what this would do to the location of the t-case, specifically as it relates to the shifter position inside the cab...anyone?

Pretty sure that everything would swap ober from a burb that came with a 4l80e. Far as the 4wd shift lever goes, it sits in the same place on the floor. Just the linkage from the lever to the transfer case is a different length.

here ya go.

The only problem there would just be locating the Suburban to pull from. The 4L80E was only available in 91, correct?

Just looking around online, I have found plenty of 4L80Es for sale (and 6.0's, as well). Anyone have any input on what would be a good price? I found a place that has rebuilt units under warranty for $795. Considering a paid $1200 to build my 700R4 about a year ago, that seems pretty damn good to me...

Thanks for the dimensions, y5mgisi. I had just looked around and saw that the difference in length was about 1.5".

As of now, just the standard 6.0L. Although, I am really struggling with the "ah why the hell not" line of logic right now...

My original debate was between the 5.3 with the Z06 cam or a stock (mechanically) 6.0. Now I'm really considering the 6.0 and a cam. Dammit.

The Z06 cam isn't much over stock unless you are running a boosted application, it really is definitely not worth the extra money. There are so many other cams that are more well suited to that engine, the Z06 cam is really only popular because it was in a fast Corvette.

I have a pretty mean LQ9 that I'm about to drop in my 98 TA. :)

Dammit....i'm Fcking addicted to this ****.

Made an offer on the 6.0/4l80e combo that was local to me.
