Next up...6.0L

The only problem there would just be locating the Suburban to pull from. The 4L80E was only available in 91, correct?

Just looking around online, I have found plenty of 4L80Es for sale (and 6.0's, as well). Anyone have any input on what would be a good price? I found a place that has rebuilt units under warranty for $795. Considering a paid $1200 to build my 700R4 about a year ago, that seems pretty damn good to me...

Thanks for the dimensions, y5mgisi. I had just looked around and saw that the difference in length was about 1.5".

I would bet that with the length difference being minimal you could easily modify your stock linkage to work with a transfer case behind the 4l80e. There might even be enough thread in the adjustment to make it.

When I called about getting a tone ring added to my 4l80e the local place said they wouldnt pull it without a rebuild, and a basic rebuild started at $950 with no hard parts replaced and went up from there. That was installed and removed from the truck as well. $800 seems like a good deal to me. I'm assuming for the warranty to be valid they have to install it, so the price might go up a bit there.

i contacted him as i was curious.... funny cuz i did this a few days before this thread...

i was getting annoyed at my holley truck avenger... but for me.. $3k-$3500 isnt going to be sitting well with the wife as my play toy doesnt get much use...

i started by googling fuel inject small block 350 and ended up at that pirate page..

he seems like a nice guy.. has a great hookup with 60k-100k mileage motors..

now I too agree that FOR ME that seems like a lot of money.. however.. knowing it is FULLY functional and a working solution.. that is really nice...

im wanting one.. but cant afford it.. id go 6L no z06 cam....

im torn cuz to add fuel injection other than his solution is $2700!!!!!! so now his doesnt seem that bad...

I like my truck dumb... im contemplating going TBI instead... found a place for $900 complete kit.. rebuilt stuff but guaranteed and warranty... that is still a lot too...

think im gonna fuss with the holley more.. and save the coins..

but

Dammit....i'm Fcking addicted to this ****.

Made an offer on the 6.0/4l80e combo that was local to me.

Sweet!! Let us know how that offer goes. I found a combo for sale for $2K pretty locally to me, but I know nothing about them besides 6.0L and 4L80E.

Tag... for future jealousy

Lander, you better have some grease on your hands before this is all done. Bring guns and we'll kill things, too.

so what manual trans can you hookup to a 6.0L???

I just found a local guy with a 100k mile 5.3L and will sell EVERYTHING to get it out the door running for $1000.... hmmm i may have to get the cash up and try to find a local yard with a 6L....

That's pretty high for a 5.3L. You can normally score a complete setup for about $650 around here.

I paid $250 for my LQ9 minus intake and coils, it supposedly ran but I was rebuilding it anyway so didn;t matter to me.

I have a line on another LQ9 for $550 complete minus wiring/computer that I am going to try and buy for my S-10.

That's outside my scope of knowledge, but I'm sure it's readily available out there somewhere. I would guess that just about any trans that you can bolt to a TH350 or TH400 would work, but that's just a complete guess and solely based on the bellhousing bolt pattern similarities. When it comes to transmissions, especially automatics, I am entire convinced they operate purely off of black magic and have no desire whatsoever to ever dive into one. I'll tear an engine apart in heartbeat, but I leave my transmissions up to the experts.

Subscribed! I just was looking at that guys site yesterday and really like the idea of the 6.0L too!

Just got off the phone with the trans guy. $795 plus a core and not including a torque converter. He has those for $175 for a stock one, so I'm gonna price shop for that and see if that's reasonable. 12 month, 12,000 mile warranty and he doesn't have to do the installation, which is a big bonus so I don't have to tow the Suburban to him.

Nice to see more folks getting the bug!

unfortunately this one is still looking better to me...

i know i know. it is tbi... but i wont have to mess with it and they said they can work with my cam and everything!!!!

that is where i started.. then found the turnkey....

however i found a guy locally that will sell me a 6.0L with anything and everything i can to get it to run.. drive by wire and all... for $1100... only 200 more than the tbi... however.. then the 6.0L may not bolt to my smc465... what else i would need to buy.. then the cost goes..

so im still stuck with either the holley or going the tbi route... not sure myself.. i think motor swap is out of the Q for me.. for now.... :dunno:

y5mgisi...holy cow! Just spent the last 3 hours or so reading you build thread. Nice!!
Same here y5mgisi, read it this morning. You didn't seem to have much of any trouble other than the wiring, def a good reference for later!

I don't know about all of the trans but a T56 (6 speed) usually comes stock with the vettes and GTO's that came with the LS2.

I just joined the site last night so I'll introduce myself later. I'm doing a similar build. Bought a totaled '05 GTO (6.0L & T56 trans) with 28k miles on it for $3k. Dropped it into a S10 pickup. Happened to move to a place where there isn't a drag strip and its just sitting:(

So plan to take that out of the S10 and install it with a TH400 & NP205. I had the S10's CPU reprogrammed and a custom harness made to plug and play. But I don't want to spend that kind of $ again on the harness. So want to utilize everything out of the S10 and drop it into my 87' K5. I'm mainly worried about what I'm going to do with all the dash panel gauges.

I'll be keeping an eye on your build, let me know what cam you go with.

I'm blaming you.

Then your welcome!

where you located at shiner.

As of today, I live in Lake Worth, but as of this weekend, I'll be moved to Abilene. Just bought a house (and as importantly, a shop) there and am in the process of moving as we speak. Will still be back to FW a lot though if you ever need a hand with anything.

Status update as of now is pretty much the same as before. Deposit has been put down on the 6.0L and I found a place here in the Metroplex where I can get a rebuilt 4L80E for about $800 or so. Pretty much just waiting on word from BD that he found my engine and then I'll start really moving forward. Some travel plans upcoming that might slow the progress, but I'll be on it as often as I can.

Just saw this one. I've been working on my GEN VI 5.3l/4l65E swap for a few months know. Almost do working on the wiring and a few small things now. Hope to have it running in the next few weeks. If I can help answer any questions fell free to ask.I used the dirty dingo mount with new energy suspension bushings. Y5mgisi has more about the swap in his thread, but you might find some other helpful info about it in mine too.
