Not so budget anymore 454 build

049 heads

Hydraulic roller cam, I can get any grind I want for $140 at the cam place by me.

I was looking and with the bigger valves it looks like I could 550hp :eek1:, But how reliable would that be for driving a trail all day?

Yep, my head guy thought they were a pretty good set. There are better out there, but this is a good set for a great price. I think the guy was an engineer for Crane Cams, and started this Gaterman products when Crane was having problems last year.Any how my head guy had no problems with them while fitting them in my heads.

I thought the same thing when I started out...

Budget to me, means finding parts that are running, getting them cheap and install as is....once you open the can.....well the snowball starts growing.

I got a little too carried away today with the porting, I started to grind down the raised area leading up to the intake valve. Now I need one of those 6" long carbide bits to get it smoothed out just right :doah::haha:

I have another question, I didn't see the machinist today, but the valve guide sticks down about .5" can they mill that off? It seems rather large and seems like it could disrupt flow.

I don't think you want to mess with that, it supports a lot of side loading on the valve.

I plan on doing all of these to my cylinder head

I would think the radial grooves would create places for droplets of fuel to collect.
And why the grooves in the cc?

Yeah I'm not that sure of either anymore

Maybe I need to think things over a little before getting to excited

I'm think that a square port intake to an oval port head would have a similar effect as the grooving

Heres my head so far, I'm not sure what I can do with the valve guide yet

Bottom pic is a comparison between the two valve sizes, see if you can guess which is the bigger one :D

I probably only have a few hours left, just finish grinding the exhaust and then polish, then finish all the combustion chambers.

the reason for grooving the intake is to create turbulence... better atomization.... thus why you only polish exhaust sides, not intakes...

I only went about 1.5" into the head, I'm going to focus more so on the aluminum intake. It will much much easier to grove.

Finished the heads today, and these bad boys arrived

It came with rings also, I took them of this one to bring to the machine shop though.

2.19/1.88 valves are to be installed and the block should be decked and bored.

It's all down hill from here, porting the heads was a major PITA

Looks like they are .210 dome not .250 like I had thought, ARP bolts, and forged pistons though :D

I think I'm going to run a zz502 cam with 1.8 lifters

.558/.576 224*/234*

I wonder if I should try and get a little more duration?
