Not so budget anymore 454 build

Oh yeah, ordered stainless valves, and dropped the heads off today :D:D:D:D

Should be done in two weeks

He said the springs will be good up to .650 lift

I'm still not sure about the cam, he says he has some but hasn't checked them yet

And my block is done also :D I'll get tomorrow.

I just used plastigauges .002 on all but the back which was .003. But I believe that is how it's supposed to be

I'm going to use a dial bore for the rods

Where can I get a decent digital bore guage?

I think .003 is the max on the mains....what was your thrust measurement?

If the rods were resized, I would do plastigage on the rods too.

I'm not really sure about what a thrust measurement is, I imagine it's forwards to backwards right? I didn't measure that

All I did was to have the crank polished and install new bearings. Everything else is the same as when it came apart. It was good for 240k the last time around

I may have to take it apart again, depends on how far down the pistons are.

On the rod bearings I am going to borrow a dial bore gauge.

Yes, the thrust is forward to rear movement, measured with all main bearings torqued in place, with no plastigage.
If you can get a dial bore gage, that is great. How did the mains look when they came out....were they worn more on one side of the bearing than the other?
That would indicate main saddles out of alignment.

All of them looked good, nothing looked out of place

I think I may just not deck it and run a shim gasket

funny story....my friend build a 454 over a couple of months time...checked every clearance....two - three time while he built it.....

got the engine in the truck...big day came to first fire the engine...
three of his buddies were there for the startup....one of them was playing with stuff laying on the bench....picked up half of a rear thrust bearing and asked him what's this for ????

of course it had been planted by one of the other guys....

the look on his face was priceless.....gave him about 10 minutes of grief before we let him in on the joke...:haha:

I would have kicked your ass.

sorry for the hijack but i know they made vortec 350 with the roller cam but did they ever build a vortec 454 with a roller cam

I think all Vortec engines are roller.

Yeah I think it's what 91 and up big blocks?

It looks like my compression ratio will be around 10:1 with a .020 shim head gasket. Around .046 quench then

The box for the roller lifters says crane, so I'm hoping that is what brand they are.

Hopefully this carb will work

It's an 830 from a NASCAR team

I'm thinking that this cam will be perfect

DURATION .050: 231 236
LOBE SEPARATION: 114 114
ADVERTISED DURATION: .006 291 296
GROSS VALVE LIFT: 597 613

Nice! I see some spinech mufflers I am running them on my dakota R/T, they have a nice throaty tone.

Yep, hopefully these sound nice. I like that fact that they are small and compact also.

That air cleaner stud is beef!

What are the headers from? If from a Chevelle or Nova, I think they will fit.
