NP205 to NV4500 Questions

Larry, how much spline engagement do you have running NV4500 / NP205 with the short input and no spacer? I am looking at my options for my NV4500 / NP205 setup but I have a racetrack pattern 205. I wanted to see if there was enough spline engagement with the short input for me to run the NWF racetrack to round pattern adapter and no spacer. If not then i will go the long input route... Thanks!

I can’t answer that one as I didn’t actually measure it but the folks at ORD where I bought the new 32 spline cog stated running the short 32 spline input was more than sufficient contact with the trans output. I don’t recall exactly how much exact spine engagement they said it had though.

I’m sure someone here can answer that one. I never even thought about taking an actual measurement, I just took Stephen’s word for it but it felt like a nice fit when I stabbed the tcase on.

if you run the round 6 style 20 with long input this is why you need the spacer .

if you swap to the short input in the round 6 style 205 you do NOT need the spacer . but will have to make sure stuff clears like he did for the shift rail . and also drive haft lengths will be different .

my buddy that I posted on before that did the swap had a difference so small on length difference with the spacer kit he didn't need to modify drive shafts or move crossmember.

As stuff wares out or breaks I'll upgrade, early if come across a deal. I don't do any rock crawling, the most of the offroading is just crossing ditches and a few really muddy fields. I admit the Cummins is gonna be over kill for what I need but I'll never have a problem withpower even with a stock 12v and I'll get better mpg loaded and unloaded than the small block or ls motors. I would like to upgrade the axles eventually but the 10 bolts ill be fine for a while. Its not like I'm trying to drag a school bus up the side of a mountain lol

That is the thing, i have a racetrack patter that was bored out to take the big bearing and I put a short input 32spline in it (that is what I could find easy). So I would need a racetrack to round pattern adapter. The NWF is 5/8" thick so i just want to make sure i have enough spline engagement. I have a guy that will trade me a long input for my short but then i need a spacer, so... Guess i will just have to see how it looks if/when I get the 4500. Also the crossmember and drive shafts for me will probably have to be moved anyway because mine is a 2wd/4wd swap and right now i have a 2wd 4l80e hooked up in the 4wd frame until I can get the trans/transfercase worked out.

I forgot i posted int this one. I had seen that weldable adapter before but what I ended up doing was, trading for the long 32spline input. I made a drawing and had a buddy of mine cut it on his CNC mill. Everything bolts up good I just need to install the trans and see what it will do as far as my drive shafts and crossmembers.

If anyone is interested, I measured my TH350 to NP205 (including figure 8 adapter) and it is 25.5" long. That is the same as post #17 from ottoman on his sm465 to NP205. So an NV4500 with bellhousing and round 6 bolt pattern NP205 (no adapter) would be 1" longer. I would choose to move the engine forward that 1 inch so you can avoid new drive shafts. My 2 cents if anybody is thinking about installing an NV4500 in place of an auto. Of coarse a round 6 bolt NP205 with a short 32 pline would need to be sourced.

Has anyone that swapped from auto to manual even bothered with wiring in the clutch pedal position switch? I cant find the connectors anywhere online. I think one is for the neutral start and the other is for cruise cancel. Advice?

I've not hooked mine up. Actually saved my butt one time, was able to use the starter to back the truck up a small hill so I could get it compression started when my carb screwed up.

Of course, conversely, if you are in a parking lot and stupidly try to start it in gear, you may not be a fan.

I've only hit the clutch pedal once while using cruise control, I can't think of many instances where you'd be using cruise and want to downshift. In any case my rev limit is set. :)

It's funny, mine is hooked up to something but I can't remember what. It'll start in gear or neutral. Maybe I should check that...

I guess you are still using the auto column? Also my cruise doesn't work right now anyway so i'm not sure why i'm concerned with it... :dunno:

Yeah maybe!

I don't have mine hooked up.

A drunk girl ran my 1982 K30 3+3 into the back of my buddy truck once because of it.

No, I have a manual column. No P/N switch on the manual trucks, the clutch switch was it to cut the starter out if the pedal wasn't depressed. The clutch switch served dual duty for rigs with cruise as it would cut cruise off as well.

Ouch! I may forgo the neutral safety switch for now but i better warn the wife or I could be in a similar situation!

So since you are all experts I am collecting parts for my sm465 to nv4500 swap. I want to keep the synco 205 that is currently a figure 8 10 spline. I am guessing it isn't as simple as a round to figure 8 adapter and a 32 to 10 spline sleeve.
