NV4500/203/205 install *updated 10/06* Done!!

LOL, I'll be happy to have it move out of the carport under it's own power now. It's starting to grow roots! :doah:

Thanks guys.

I just want to add that Castrol Syntorq 75W85 GL-4 is not cheap. Just took it dry at the GM stealership...$29 per litre. :doah: :doah: :doah:

I did a lot of reading before accepting that I really should just pay for the Castrol stuff. In the end I didn't see a good reason to take a chance of wrecking a tranny I spent 6 months rebuilding and over $1200 in parts.

Ironically GL-4 is an obsolete rating, but the additives in GL-5 for EP are corrosive to some of the yellow metals on the NV4500 synchro's. Apparently this particular viscosity is also very good at keeping the shifts smooth even in cold conditions.

I don't know if anyone else cares, but I thought I'd add this anyways.

They really ream you for the Syntorq. I found it at the Dodge dealer for $5-10/ qt cheaper than GM, but that was a few years ago and may have been a luck deal. The recommended change interval is 100K, however, so you don't need it often. My 4500 did not come with a drain plug, so I had to remove a PTO cover to drain it, I was worried that the RTV would set wrong and I would leak $100+ of oil out. Also, the Dodge guys run 1/2 qt+ extra, or up to 5 qt in the Cummins apps, they claim it lowers the failure rate of the input bearing under heavy stress.

Mine has no drain plug either...which is just wierd. Oh well, one less place for it to leak I guess. I put in 4.3 quarts (4 litres)...but judging by the level I could squeeze in another pint or so before the oil would come out the fill hole.

This truck will never tow anything more than a utility trailer, so I'm not worried about ever working this tranny real hard. As for the 100,000 mile change interval from what I have read that was purely GM and Dodge that came up with that...not Castrol and not NVG. I'll probably change this stuff out every two years or so regardless of mileage. Hopefully i can find a cheaper source in the meantime.

I'm just routing all the vent lines now, then double checking for any loose fasteners.

hey Rene,
do you think we could see an updates picture of you truck with the transmission in? it would be cool to see how much you sucked up the tranny in ralation to the body of the truck. just a nice "profile" image of your truck. thanks man,
steven k.

Well, it's dark but I hope this was what you were looking for. That's from 12 feet away.

I actually ordered my 5150's through Kyle at Northwest Fab. I'm not 100% sure where he was getting them from, but i have heard from him that it seems most vendors are just drop shipping. I'm hoping they show by next Thursday or so.

I'm getting a pair of 1410/1410 shafts built right now at South Bay driveline. My angles aren't the best, but seem to be within the operating range of the 1410's. If I have vibe problems I'll post that up...

Best guess it looks like my drivetrain may be an inch or so higher than yours. It's pretty hard to tell in pic's though.

Was that a fibreglass front fender? If so you were driving a yellow short box back then right?

Rene

:D Yes thats right it was.. I was, but traded it back, and he wrote it off.. long gone and have since grown up.

going to blazer bash this year?

how about next?? :

looking good. have you determined if you are going to be able to run the same length shafts front and rear? you opt to avoid cv shafts due to price, or just personal preference? could you snap some pics of your angles?

Rear shaft is about 6" shorter than the front shaft. I decided on double U-joint shafts to keep it simple and strong. As soon as I get the shafts I'll take some pic's of my angles.
