OFFICIAL* Dante's Peak Suburban Build *

I did get a gut full of gasoline on Wednesday when I was fixing a tractor. Not very filling or nutritious.

That should be entertaing in a 36 feet long semi with a 25 feet long trailer, but doable.

I had a simliar thought. Coming from the North, the driveway hits the highway just past the "Welcome to Ouray" sign (though it's still a couple of miles away from town). But the road is nearly inline with the highway, so you're stuck either making the hairpin turn, backing up the hill, or driving past and turning around. Not sure which would be best with the trailer, but it will be interesting to say the least. It should be doable, but certainly entertaining!

Why don't you just park the semi on the roadside and let the Suburban coast down the hill to the highway? That gravel turnout by the city sign looks a whole lot friendlier than going up the driveway and then having to turn around up there. Google's guessing the distance at 400 feet from the bottom of the driveway (assuming the truck can drive that far).

You have thoughts on this, Lawrence?

I really wish I could be there for this...

Especially as the turnoff from the highway is very steep and rutted, and washboardy last time I was there. It would be much smarter to run big red out to the highway.

I'm glad this is all coming together. I will be meeting riley in butte and storing it at my house for a while until Russell can make it and I'll be taking it up to the border for him.

Hi folks! I am back from vacation. Faced off with a bear for my lunch (He won... Jerk!) and generally enjoyed the wilderness last week.

If red runs enough to get him down to the road that would be by far the better option than taking the Semi up the hill. It actually wouldn't be all that bad to get a big truck and trailer in there for a talented driver like Wade, but why make things more difficult than they need to be.

I've got the L18 in my shop and I've got a couple small things I need to do on it. I'm putting in a fresh set of injectors, a couple new sensors and updating the control system. I'm going to keep the SM465 in the name of simplicity and cost considerations. I'll put in a new clutch and have the exhaust replaced with an OEM system to keep Red nice and quiet as well as emissions compliant with cats and an EGR system. This L18 was previously installed in a 1983 pickup, so it's more or less already set up to be put right back into another one.

Parts that I need to order right now include:

- Clutch
- Exhaust
- 4 core radiator
- BBC lower rad hose and L18 upper rad hose
- High pressure fuel pump
- Fuel pressure regulator
- Fuel lines and fittings
- Throttle pedal
- Misc electrical bits (wiring, heat shink, crimps etc)

I'm guessing that the cost will come in at around 3 or $4000 Canadian. I'll post my paypal address for those who want to help with the cost of parts after I've got Red here and in my garage. I want to make sure that those who want help for towing costs are covered first.

I told Russell to keep the stick to save work and cost. I am thinking that if it can be done the radiator should be where an auto can be added later if possible (uncharted waters for me). It has been thirty years since I did a swap and so much has changed. I know nothing about the new motors.

The starter on the current motor is new and the fuel pum in the tank is about a year old. I need to put as much money towards this as I can so I am selling stuff on ebay under abcarlo as well.

To date I have sold stuff to bring the gas card fund to $323.00
The plan is to give Wade the paypal debit card to use. Then if any is left give the card to Riley and so fourth. When the money is gone the person mails the card back to me.

Wade, if you ever want to come visit mt please let me know. I'd be more than happy to tour guide. Also maybe poke around for some help on telling me what to do with my flooded basement hah.
