Old Iron 2.0

Have you never seen anyone reuse the H1 wheels?

Not in person, I've seen the TWF ones that are really nice but expensive.

I know that they are a true double beadlocks and they hold up well. That all I've seen the rock bouncers down south use.

I'm running the home made version of TWF's. Same thing as your write up you posted. Minus the fact mine are the 8 bolt ones that leak a lot, I really like mine.

Trading some parts I have in the garage that I havent been able to sell off for a set of x5 16.5" GM steel wheels tomorrow (so long as the guy doesn't change his mind).

Pretty stoked about that. Guess I'll be needing to look for some hub caps soon lol.

Make sure they have safety beads.

Martin

I thought all the stock 16.5's had safety beads?

I think they're still gonna have tires on them so it's gonna be hard to check.

He says they're coming off of a '77 3/4 Ton Camper Special. The wheels are mounted to an 8 lug D44 and 14FF.

It's just as easy to tell with the tires on as it is with the tires off. Not all stock 16.5" wheels have safety beads. I have only ever seen them on the narrow wheels (6.25", 6.5, and 6.75"). I've never seen the wide ones (8.5" and 9.75") with a safety bead.

I believe it had to do with whether the truck was ordered with tube or tubeless tires? As I have seen 16" steel GM wheels without safety beads on a few trucks.

Yes, check for safety beads. I have 2 sets that do not have them, and if you lose pressure, they can partially dismount themselves.

I'm also tossing around the idea of buying this winch plate (attached pics) and just making or having some plates for the outer side of the frame rails made to mount it to.

The plate is 28" wide. Outside to outside of my frame rails measures out to 28.25", surely I can squeeze them down to 28" with a ratchet strap.

The frame plates would be of the same design as my cardboard rendering with the plate attaching to the top of them.

I may try and squeeze the stock bumper back on there if I go this route, would have to take some material off of the top but I think it would be doable.

I used their 2 piece winch plate on a Toyota bumper recently. The bottom and back lip look exactly the same but the front plate is separate, and tapers back a little on the outboard ends. It worked really well, I used the 2 piece because I was going for tucking the winch as far back as possible, so I drilled a new set of holes and cut a little more than an inch off the front of the bottom plate, worked quite well.

Nice score on the wheels and tires! Keep it up, I like where this is going :waytogo:

Can you link the plate you're speaking of?

Got the wheels today, made a small trade for them that I was really happy with.

Took some pics for @82355. They are a two piece wheel, the wheel center is riveted to the wheel.

The wheel has ridges in it on both sides, I believe that is the safety bead?

Found this short article about GM 16.5" wheels and the safety bead.

What I have sitting in the back of my Jeep looks to be the same wheels that are pictured in the article.

I have yet to pull them out due to the limited amount of room I have in my garage. Those x6 37's are taking up the whole front portion of my garage and the junk that I pulled off of the truck is wasting space also.

I really need to get a small storage unit. Too many large parts taking up valuable space.
