Old Iron Build ('79 K5 Cheyenne)

Got the U-Bolts and studs in today for the D60/14BFF.

Got the A-Bomb yesterday and cleaned it up with a wire cup wheel in my angle grinder, still got a few spots to hit and then a good wipe down with laquer thinner and it'll be ready for primer and paint.

Mocked the winch inside of it and I'm very happy with everything!

Updates:
14 bolt shock mounts and factory spring perches removed, cleaned the tubes real nice, filled some rust pitting by welding it. Primers the tubes... haven't touched the pumpkin yet.

Drums removed, hubs removed from drums

A-Bomb installed with winch bolted in, winch handle clocked forward, valance cut so everything fits.

D60 installed, factory shock mounts cut-off.

The person who pulled the axles cut everything off with a plasma or oxy torch and I had to get the old studs out so I went and got the correct nuts for the studs and welded them on and backed 'em out with a breaker bar until they were loose enought to use a ratchet. Worked out perfectly.

How she sits currently:

Shackle angle is kicked too far back for me so I'm gonna go down to 4" shackles and probably put an EZ Inch in there to try and keep it all leveled out.

Next few things I'm working on:

Fender trimming (Pics below of where I plan on cutting).

Removing ALL HVAC components

Pulling engine, clean it up really good, probably paint it, new valve covers and oil pan, new gaskets and seals all the way around. Most likely a new intake too. Probably a new water pump and fuel pump. Gonna install the new distributor, spark plug and spark plug wires too.

Gotta get some headers too, leaning towards short tubes.

My brother is gonna go through the engine with me cause I know squat about the internals.

Above the blue tape on this part, trying to remove the rust and keep it level with the cut on the "fang"

Those 17" factory dodge rims are nut to butt with the factory tie-rod... they're pretty much rubbing. I was planning on running some 1", 1.5" or 2" spacers as a temporary fix until I can afford the trail worthy 17" HD Beadlocks that I want to get.

Any opinions or suggestions on this issue?

Looking at these pictures, your shackle angle looks pretty good to me.

You've been BUSY.

So when are you going to burn the spring perches in?

Also, going to help you out with a link since you have an a-bomb bumper too.

Just ordered these this weekend to take up some of the slack in the d-ring shackles on the a-bomb. They will serve as good d-ring isolators at the tabs.

Still looking for something to put on the bow of the shackle so they don't clang on the bumper. I know Daystar makes a shackle isolator for 3/4" shackles but I don't know if it will work on the 7/8" shackles that the a-bomb takes.

If the Daystar stuff won't fit I might just have to split some hose open length wise and use zip ties or adhesive or something.

Thanks for that link!

Honestly I'm thinking about getting some different perches... I dont like the offsets for the pin, they're different distances from the center hole. I also had to take a cutting wheel and remove about 1/4" from the bottom of the both spring perches and do some grinding for them to even fit the tube.

You don't think that it would do one of these numbers when put into reverse?

normal_P1010013~2.JPG

My shackles are sitting about the same as yours and I have no issues. Ive never seen shackles do that in reverse...your springs would have to flatten out and also some axle movement to the rear and the snow ball effect of drive shaft slippage...... :dunno:

-------------------------------------------------------edit------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just re-looked at your shackle angles again...nope, definitely don't thing it would flip back like that. Your shackles are too long and, I believe, your springs wont be able to flatten out enough to push back the length of the shackle. I still say your good to go.

Ok, well I'll keep 'em for now and see how she does once everything is all buttoned up and adjust if needed.

So what do you think about your front shackle angle now that you have the a-bomb? Better, same, etc? That was the whole reason you ditched the B52s wasn't it?

I ditched the B52's because I couldn't use my damn factory recovery hooks with those brackets... so I started brainstorming recovery point options for the front and next thing you know I call Kert and place an order.

Shackle angle is the exact same with the A-Bomb as it was with the B52's. The only difference between the two in that aspect is that you have flexibility with the B52's being able to mount them forward or rearward about 1" to 2" give or take, with the A-Bomb it's only one mounting option.

I'll be using the B52's on my pickup once I finish the Blazer up and can drive it daily.
