Ole' Red. Slow n steady

I think maybe I have an idea on my odd knock that comes and goes.

The spark plug wires are still 30 years old.
I wonder if 2 of them are jumping spark now and then and causing detonation in one cylinder.
It would only be on the compression stroke of that hole so would be half the speed of rpm by my thinking.:dunno:

Changing wires soon to see :waytogo:
Cap, rotor, and plugs on the way too.

One way to confirm is run it at night and watch for a blue stray spark

May have good news!
I changed the cap, rotor, and wires. And so far, NO HINT of knocking or even a tic:woot:

I have to give it a few gallons of gas, and let it warm up once. But at this point it sounds different already :thumb:

Nah, I think if it gets swapped it's getting one of the 2 engines I already have. Cheaper that way lol.

And since that's a gen 6 454 and an LS, it'll probably be the LS if it happens.

Somehow the LS seems more acceptable than a 454. Lol.

Kind of surprised today.
I got it out to run Stabil in it and it never made the clicky/knocky sound. Also held 40 psi oil pressure all the way to about 160* when I eventually shut it off.
I let it warm up till about 130 idling. Revved it a few times. No sound. So I put it in gear and did a short one legger power brake. No bad sounds.
So I drove it around the block, and it was solid all the way.
Peeled out all the way up my driveway. Still no bad sounds.
Parked it with 40psi oil at idle.

:dunno:

You know.... It never dawned on me until it was -12* out.
But this thing sat in a heated garage untouched for almost 30 years. And there's a good chance the antifreeze isn't so anti freezy more  :doah:
Kinda really wish I had checked that. Since it's now in a -8* garage.

Oops!

Here’s a ?
how many times have frost plugs actually done their job compared to a block being cracked?

Hopefully your good. :waytogo:

I think those are misnamed throughout car guys. Their purpose was in casting the block and retrieving the sand.

I'm hoping it's good. I really, really need it to be good. Lol.
Since I just sold the 454 option for the burb, I no longer have an LS backup for this.
Im going to check it tomorrow, and if there's liquid in there instead of an ice block, I'll consider it good.

Antifreeze does lose the anti-corrosive properties as it ages, so if you don't know when it was done it should probably be on the list. Even indoors, I can't imagine somebody storing it with just water. That will take out the pump bearing, rust the heads and block and all kinds of bad things.

Can he get to the block drains just above the pan rails?

My sons Corvette has the rusty coolant issue. We flushed it 3 times before he took it home.
Get some evaporust for radiator.
You put it in the cooling system and you drive it I think for a few days and it removes all the rust, then flush it and put coolant.
I used it once and it works
