One Piece at a Time: My 1985 Diesel Suburban

It sure is tough to make progress when:
  • The AN fittings I ordered last week come in two different shipments, the second of which is delayed by the heavy rains in the south
  • NAPA's water pump is a piece of Chinese junk. Returned and ordering from SSDiesel.
  • And, my Quincy QT54 has a leaking crankcase gasket and is half apart waiting for repair (all under warranty). I've become dependent on my air tools for all but the most basic cuts.
But, now that the intercooler is back, I can measure for my new radiator.

Guess that's my update. Frustrated.

David

Bummer. But it's good that you have some progress to go with the frustration.

What a great weekend to be outside. Spent yesterday in the hill country clearing and burning a small field, but got back this morning well in time to finish one of the core support torque boxes. I started patterning everything earlier in the week, and just now have it rendered in steel. This is actually my second version.

The top plate is mostly a backstop to the box.

I didn't want to burn or damage the factory emissions sticker, and a wet sponge worked well to keep the heat from spreading.

I built plain at first, but then decided it needed some flare. There will be a diverter panel in front to manage air flow across the core.

Now to smooth the welds and build the other side. Got a busy work schedule ahead, and I'm looking forward to whatever time in the shop I can get.

A grinding we will go , a grinding we will go. Lol

Glad your taking the time to do so finished product is so much nicer

Totally agree. While I miss driving my truck, I'm glad to be able to take my time and build this exactly how I want.

New water pump is here. Kennedy Diesel sells an aftermarket pump, and while it doesn't have the raised original 'HO' marking indicating the 97+ 130gpm flow rate, a quick check of the impeller diameter verifies I have the correct one - about 4.25" across. I also picked up a gasket set and a new fuel filter.

Meanwhile, in Arizona, Ron Davis is working on my new radiator. They're building in Solidworks from my drawing, and I should have that here in a week or two before they go to production.

Other box is built, and I did quite a bit of cleanup on the backside. Small welds and more hammer and dolly to cleanup the edges around the air flow opening.

I've now begun staring down the center brace to develop a lower profile version since it will interfere with the future AC condenser. I'm still at it.

Meanwhile, my list.

Buy a green marker?

Martin
It's sort of from a Month Python skit. Can't remember which one, but they're making a plan of action, and they only have a red marker which works just fine. So, the first thing on the list is a black marker. Then the plan making can proceed. Laughter follows.

I happen to have a dozen promotional green sharpies from a customer. It was funnier in my head when I made the list.

Work is calmer this week, so I'll be out in the shop tonight.

Here's my second version of the center reinforcement, which I'll fill in the open area tomorrow night, modify the lower valence mount, test fit the grill, then burn in the rest of the bracing. The hood latch platform relaxes 3/8" when you remove the factory brace, and I'm paranoid about making that sagged dimension permanent and nothing fits correctly.

All for tonight.

Got a couple of hours early. Center brace ready to tack into the core. My AC condenser gets here later in the week, so I'll hold off burning it until I can confirm it all fits together.

Dropped in the factory condenser since it's a very similar size to the one from Vintage Air. I'm probably going to have to build additional air flow panels around the core, and modify the hood latch hook.

Ruler marks the hood latch hook, which wants to extend 3.25" below the lip of the hood.
