One Piece at a Time: My 1985 Diesel Suburban

It’s in another box; just the 250hp DB2.

Excellent. I have a soft spot for the old Roosa-Master tractor engine pump (which is the foundation for the DB2). And I really don't have any affection for the DS4 and it's finicky control system.

But why sell the injectors?

If you were local I would have picked up those heads by now. I can't say that I need them, but I also can't say that I don't need them. I still have this nagging feeling that I'll be doing head gaskets on mine eventually.

But I have '82 heads with '82-only coarse-thread injectors. So they wouldn't fit yours anyways.

It’s been a good series of days in the shop with my dad, disassembling this new engine.

The crank and rest of the rotating assembly is ready to go for balancing.

Everything is labeled…

…and neatly packaged. I doubt this brand new engine cares about which rings or bearings go where, but I’ll keep track of it all the same.

And an old head bolt becomes a thread cleaner.

Steady progress. Many pieces to keep track of.

I’m an impatient sucker as of lately so I know if it was mine the engine would be stuffed between the fenders already. But the fact that you are going through a brand new engine with a higher level of detail and precision is awesome. As always that effort will payoff later a long life of service.

Should be sweet when it’s together.

How do you end up with a Goodyear engine stand? Not something I would think of them making.

My impatience is what’s keeping this 6.5, and not going duramax.

Call it the Willomet GEP 6.5.
My dad actually wants to do this in his retirement. He’s like a pig in slop.

My uncle snagged this years ago and never used it. It has to be a private label item, because I agree with you that this doesn’t seem something they would make.

Meanwhile, brotherhood. Greg’s got the slush box, and is giving it his once-over.

Several gears are turning.

The rotating assembly, heads, and intake and exhaust manifolds are at the machine shop. Stuff gets balanced and port matched.

Meanwhile, the second compression rings are in a FedEx box and headed to total seal for the gapless upgrade. Incidentally, each ring set weighed out identically - 0.0615 grams.

I should have everything I need for the short block in about two weeks. One or two more for the rest.

In the meantime, I’m fiddling with stuff that’s recently become accessible.

Wrapped up the bracket for the fresh and fancy FASS fuel pump.

And I went ahead and transferred my frame reinforcement templates to 3/16 steel.

Dimples tomorrow for the plates and a fit check. My dad is wiring the pump, and I’m going to start on the new fuel line routing.

Beautiful weather this week, and lots to do.

You and @KirsL have me wanting a FASS setup with my turbo now …

100 self-regulated gallons per hour may prove handy.

Oh, you should add these to the list of things to get. I put them on mine to help with the valve covers leaking. So nice. Stupid simple but they work.

Do you wheel that thing with the shifter in o.d. ?
Not often. It’s usually in 2nd or 1st. The computer doesn’t even have 4th gear in the 4x4 program (I didn’t set it up).
