One Piece at a Time: My 1985 Diesel Suburban

210/215 is the rated engagement for the KD clutch, and while it's a fine line from too hot (220+), I'm confortable with 210 as my planned upper limit. It's worked for our engines so far, but they're not pulling 12k lbs up pikes peak, either.

The only Banks part left is the passenger exhaust manifold. I never liked the reviews on the T04B, so I have the 6.9/7.3 TE06H wastegated turbo. Very favorable backpressure/boost ratio up to about 20psi boost.

You and I are thinking similarly about air gaps. Close out the sides so all air must flow through the core opening.

Curious to see what those folks come up with on the Horton. I'd plunk down some change to have certainty and control over the temperature engagement. Not every hill needs 3rd gear, and I'd like the same performance when pulling in 4th, locked or otherwise. Also would be nice to have truly free spin at idle or cruising.

If it's staying constant even being that hot it's not too bad.

That's a much better turbo for these engines I think too.

Yep, take ideas from new trucks with how they channel the air is my plan. Shouldn't be too hard. Something like a felt could work good and be flexible enough too.

They've made some good progress on it. I think with your current set up it should cool pretty well in either gear.

Nice to see it all together (without the tank sliced up).
Right now, finished parts are my favorite.

Awesome piece
Custom built?
It is. Ron Davis, (2) 1.25" row dual pass, 34" core, with tanks designed for intercooler outlet clearance and engine and transmission oil coolers. I did a quick test fit, and it all nests together as intended.

If the rain would just stop...

Meet Harriet, the official dog of The Willomet Garage.
image.jpeg

She's a red heeler mix; a stray that wandered up late last week just before Ethan's visit. He and the family were her first visitors. Since arriving, she's now parvo free, vaccinated, dewormed (and there were plenty), and getting more energy each day.

We're glad she's here.

Parts look good.

Pets that find you are the best. Had a cat growing up that picked my family, best one we ever had.

Dang, that's a beautiful radiator... Prettier than mine even.

Good job on the dog! There are so many dogs in need of homes out there, glad you kept her!

It's been a busy few weeks. Let's catch up.

The coolant crossover cracked during disassembly...

New GM pieces were in stock on Amazon Prime...

Note here a Mishimoto 180F thermostat. Oddly, the dual thermostat 6.5 setup shares the same size thermostat and o-ring as that of some 90s ford rustangs. I like those flow profile much better than the older style Robert Shaw pieces. Call this PM.

I replaced the water pump...
It doesn't show the 'HO' cast in the body, but the impeller has the correct key dimension - 4.25" diameter...

image.jpeg

clearanced the power steering accessory bracket to allow for the MT480 timing probe...

image.jpeg

flipped and modified the upper radiator return outlet...

modified the hood latch to clear the AC condenser...

image.jpeg

bent more aluminum lines to manage the routing of fluids through their respective coolers...

image.jpeg

fixed the incompletely threaded drain plug...

and started smoothing and blending the core support in prep for paint.

Big weekend ahead.

Nice work, man! :thumb:

I'm surprised that you ordered a new T-stat housing. Weren't you just showing me one in your spare parts collection? dunno:

Thanks. I swore I had one. Searched through my inventory, and couldn't seem to find it. Glad new GM castings were not terribly expensive.

Your work is something we should all be inspired by.
Wow, thank you! Means a lot. Definitely lucky that I can park the truck for several months to work at my own pace.
