One Piece at a Time: My 1985 Diesel Suburban

Happens to me all the time when I'm driving. I always figured it was my 280lbs ass, but now I know it's not me at all. It must the spring..... Just like the washing machine keeps shrinking my clothes. :haha:

lol I resemble that remark!

Just to chime in on a serious note, even though I want to make a different comment,
My '90 was leaning and I swapped rear springs side to side and the lean switched too.

Yes, I think that would be the true test. Swap springs and see if it follows the spring.

If you do it before the spring completely sags, like with David's truck it will look good with the swap.
If it's beyond and will not spring back, it will switch sides until the usage equalizes it

My truck has always leaned passenger, two different frames with same results. I want to try swapping springs side to side but haven't had a chance.

I am not heavy at 170 lbs but I try to always balance the weight in my vehicle to make sure I don't contribute to uneven stance.
I have anything I put it opposite side.
So far no problems

I’ve swapped rear springs side to side before - fixed that lean. Swapping the fronts seems to have evened out her Oak Cliff swagger. Hard to be sure, because it’s up in jack stands again.

Rear wheel bearing seals hate me.

I had some seals in stock (my last set of USA-made Chicago rawhides), so I’ve already serviced the bearing hubs, and the shoes are in stock at NAPA. I’ll pick it all up tomorrow and assemble over lunch.

Every time I open up the drums, I want a modern 14FF with discs and a drum parking brake.

No kidding. Even a van axle (like mine) would be a big step up.

Is it an optical illusion, or are those rear springs twisted funny?
Partial illusion. Shackle flip rotates the arch down slightly, and the pins are back 1” from center. Front half seems flatter than the back.
Hey, you almost got a year out of that seal.....

And the discs are a nice upgrade, lighter and easier to service.
Funny enough, the field repair side was leak-free. This was the other side, which was replaced when I got back to Texas after BB17.

Discs will come from a new generation 10.5, with the drum parking brake. With so many projects personally, side-gig, and my full-time job, I keep putting off this sub-project. I just need to get on the stick, find an axle, and get it locked and regeared, and swap it in.

Do the outers not swap readily?

I do not think they do. There’s a company that sells an adapter plate to make the caliper mount up.

I haven’t seen any of my local yards separate brakes from the axle - a sort of take it all or take none of it arrangement. That suits me, since I’d rather build a new axle with an ARB and a modest truss.
