One Piece at a Time: My 1985 Diesel Suburban

Evening, gents.

Sliders are fully welded. Photos are in no particular order.

Welding for hours straight is highly meditative.

Next up, finish weld the body side clevis mounts, wire wheel everything, paint, and final installation.

These photos need to be posted in the Pen. Nice porn

I’ll need to shed a few personal pounds to offset, but I’m pleased with how they’re coming along.

These are the only nudes I’ll be posting.

You beat me to it, those things add quite a bit of weight.
You might need to add another turbo or all the work you did on the new turbo and intercooler will be wasted by this weight.
:doah:

Beautiful work David

Been watching the weather for ya. Getting cold this week but it's supposed to break and warm back up

They’re about 120lbs ea, but I’ll trade the weight for the rocker protection. So far, the 6.2 shrugs off the new lean muscle mass, and it’s all due to the HE351CW. I’m a fan.

Gracias, señor. I have not looked at the weather. At all. Right now, I’m thinking I’ll just run my medium weight gear - pretty much my December/January Texas hunting gitup. It’s good down to 50F. Fortunately, that gear stays packed in my ruck, so it’s grab and go.

Well forecast here are really erratic. Day before is a good time to look at the weather and probably still not be accurate

So once I get my jaw off the floor I’ll be able to speak...

Incredible work on the sliders David, matches everything else you’ve done with your truck!

This is the build that convinced me to get my stuff out there and even turned me away from abandoning my build. Keep up the inspiring work!

Ain't no way you're personally shedding 240 pounds to balance this back out.
Fair. I’ll just up the truck’s designation from M998 to M1114.

Thanks, Andy.

It’s been a fun process making them, and I only wish I’d done so earlier. They’re certainly more slider than most folks build and use, but I reason that my truck is darned heavy and I don’t know exactly what we will encounter on the trail.

Others on here inspired me to better document and share my build progress, and I am just following their good example. Your build is unique and is the start of another great story, and it can do for the next new CK5 member what mine might have done for yours.

Quick update.

I finish welded the body side clevises for the sliders, again confirming how much I dislike overhead welding.

Then, forties.

Tomorrow’s checklist is a pretty good one, but I’ll hold on the details until it’s done.

I'm digging the look of the tires combined with the invisible quarterpanels. :saweet: :burnout:

It’s all part of the weight management program.

Today, the truck gets some cosmetic love. I have a fresh pack of 80 grit discs for my 3” DA, and I can legally start making noise in another 30 minutes. Astute observers on the instagrammery will have a good guess as to what I’m working on.

Mask on.

Question is are you going blue or black after you grind it off?

Fantastic work sir.
Muchas gracias.

Black. Looking to just visually replace what was there.
What da fuqk? Is wrong with you?

Try it for 10hours days, 6 days a week. It's not nearly as fun then.
What’s wrong with me? That’s a long list.

Good evening of progress - old body line is sanded and prepped

Raptor liner is down.

It’s straight, it covers the rust, and it maintains the visual separation of the rocker. It’s temporarily permanent, and will serve its purpose.

Excuse the angle. I took it off IG.

Wrapped up some smaller tasks this evening.

I finally cut out the factory bump brackets and installed the ones I had fabbed a couple of weeks ago. They’re setup for intial contact in 3”, and full compression 2-5/8” after that. The shocks are already setup for 6” compression and 8” droop.

The bracket is designed to be modified to accept a 2.5” air bump can, if I ever get to that point. Like near the sliders, I’ll build a crossmember to run between the rails. These are cantilevered out about 4” from the frame, so there will be a load on the factory c-channel, but I’m just about out of time.

My dad stopped by for a couple of hours and installed the new Tom Woods driveshaft, and prepped the older one to be the trail spare. Also, he reindexed the wiper arms. It was a problem.

Sliders are fully primed and painted, and the rear bumper just needs a light refresh.

waiting for the money shot with the sliders, bumper and forties on
Call in the weekend fluffer. Tires go on Monday.
