One Piece at a Time: My 1985 Diesel Suburban

Need some input - what is the general consensus on replacement fuel tanks? I have a self-inflicted crack in mine, and I’m on the fence as to whether to:
  • Drain, drop, wash, flood with Argon, and TIG the crack
  • Or just replace
Opinions?

Meanwhile, BleepinJeep put up their 21Rd and Moab footage. Great editing.

Where and how big is the crack?
I think I would just weld it myself.
Why Tig? Why would you bother with a backpurge? Unnecessary on both parts for a stock mild steel tank.
Just fire the GMAW up and weld it and be done.
Make sure you drill the ends.

If the cracks is small, fix it. If it's pretty beat up and cracked, replace.

You can save some argon by having the cracks in the low spot. Argon is heavier then air.

How big of a crack? The stock tank is thin. When subjected to rocks, well it cracks. IMHO it's easier to get a replacement tank.

But it's pretty easy to weld the tank . Kind of an either or

Although that tank is 70 bucks cheaper on rock auto. Shipping might equal it out. My last one I found cheapest on Amazon.

Crack due to rocks?
No. Cracks from being dumb.

I air hammered a rivet and it became wedged between the tank and the skid plate, and developed two 1/2” cracks. The indentation is minor.

I just prefer the control of TIG.

The cracks are small. Good tip on work planning - filling a 40 gallons is about 5 cu ft. That’s a good bit of argon.

I wish I had a great story to tell. It’s just a lack of attention to detail during the last minute thrash before the Trail to SEMA.

Day 5 from Busted Knuckle.

There’s one more coming from these guys, one or two from BleepinJeep, and the real episodes from Powerstop go live 12/12.

A neighbor just asked me if my truck was a bronco.

He and I can never be friends.

David
:doah:
I know that people confuse the k5 with the Bronco, but come on the bronco is a 2 door, suburban 4 door.
And just in case someone says, I know there's a 4 door bronco but it's rare and aftermarket.

Nice work. I've done some side jobs out of my truck, seems like I always forgot something :doah:. But was fun to do once in a while.

Yeah. I’m really not setup for mobile work either, but it’s fun to take the odd job and load up. And I always forget something.

You brought your mig which is little easier.

I've always brought my Dynasty 200. So I was stuck with stick welding. I did do one mobile tig job but that was way too much stuff to bring with me.

Yeah, the only way I would take my inverter TIG mobile is to run it in stick mode. A friend mine was joking that I should put a Miller bobcat on the slide.
