One Piece at a Time: My 1985 Diesel Suburban

Bigger calipers with hydroboost would put your retinas on the windshield!
I love my hydroboost in the diesel. I'm putting it in my gasser too.

Today I wore my WF T-shirt. My 5yo says "It's the Suburban that's missing a wheel!"

--pause, while intently examining the brush guard--

"Daddy, you should put a thing on the front of our Suburban to push the trees out of the way. Like this one, or like the ArmyTruck!"

My Grandson is dying for me to get the jolly green giant going. I told him when he gets a little bigger he can sit up front with Papa! I am thinking really hard on throwing a front axle under it and use the 4x4 for parts.

Drop in the 4500 and a spare10 bolt I already have...sounds more doable the more I think about it.

Oops! Hijack off! Sorry

It’s not a huge leap to say factory square body brakes are, well, underwhelming. That’s before any fun parts or beef get added
I could feel the difference when I went from the 37s to some very heavy 38s and the H2s with wheel spacers. It got slightly better with the 40s on KMCs, but it’s not tight.
So you get the caliper from Powerstop and the bracket from someone else?
Yessir. Brackets are from Torq.

I’m not sure what kind of booster and master cylinder tuning might be required, but you’ve got the same idea as me.
Suffice it to say that your truck has become famous in my household.
You’re training the next generation of diesel suburban aficionados.

Wheel studs arrived today, and I’ve got some time lined up on my buddy’s lathe.

Time to go do some stopping tests.

I'm not sure what master cylinder you are running but i have a P30 hydroboost/diesel and 4 wheel disc one on my diesel blazer and it increased the stopping power a ton. Bolts right on and increased the bore size from 30 mm to 34 mm if remember correctly. Might need the extra fluid flow with those bigger calipers.

They’re Powerstop’s version of a 2009 Dodge 3500 caliper. They have minor rigidity improvements over the stock ones, plus a fancy powder coat.

So these are remanufactured or brand new castings? You happen to have a part number?

Once upon a time there was a place in Washington maybe called Blackbird's Customs I think, that was making a really nice setup just like this to run the Dodge calipers on a front axle. they went out of business. I wanted the Torq setup for my kingpin 60 in my ford but I ended up selling the truck. I thought there was another company doing a kit with Chevy 2500 parts also.

That's really good feedback, and thank you. I still have the 3/4 ton piece on the truck, but have been planning to use that 34mm/1-5/16" bore size master for this change, since I just don't see how the smaller bore can push enough to make the Dodge calipers work. Arguably, I should have switched long ago.

Brand new from Powerstop: KC5411-36 is the fully loaded kit. I put it in my Amazon store: https://amzn.to/2WRJwij

There's an option for just pads and rotors in case you can score an OE set of calipers, which I think would be every bit as effective since most of the gains come from the Z36 compound pads and the matching/fresh rotors.

I've fallen a bit behind, since I got some sort of virus that has symptoms similar to The 'Rona. Fortunately, it's all been pretty mild, but I've taken it easy as a precaution. There's a ton of work ahead.

The new 14 bolt is in stock, so my current one is definitely going to be for sale.

This is a 2007, with 3.73s and an open diff. Also, discs! The price was right, and my dad and I zipped over to one of my favorite Dallas salvage yards for the pickup.

For Greg, because it’s Thursday.

2001 is when they made the switch to aam.
I have a '03 aam axle in my 79. It's the 11.5 ring gear. But they still make the 10.5 ring gear for some applications. I assume this is a 11.5 otherwise I am not sure the point of the upgrade? Unless your after the fact-tree disks.

I thought by '07 they were using the AAM rear axles?

Yeah Dodge runs the 10.5 in lighter duty early common rail trucks and then switched to the 11.5 I was not sure what GM ran in what trucks as far as 10.5 vs 11.5
