One Piece at a Time: My 1985 Diesel Suburban

Rear axle assembly continues, and I made a few contributions to the tuition pile. This time, it was stainless brake line.

Some quick modifications to the factory brake brackets to suit the bulkhead connectors.

I really like the tan on black. I think the red calipers are cool, but it would also be cool if they were tan too. I know I'm adding a lot of tech to this discussion with all the cool brake line work. :D

Oh, I like that idea. Once I finish the videos, I can paint/powder coat it all to my taste, which is mostly just black. But, the ORD FDE has been growing on me.

Meanwhile. Brake lines are built.

I’ve been putting together a fresh design from our friends at ORD.

A new shackle designed specifically for the tension crowd. The boomerang shape brings the spring eye to level with the hanger mount, which adds about 2.5” of droop compared to using their standard compression shackle. I milled that pocket on the hanger a while back and will get a tad bit more down travel because of it, but the boomerang profile makes that mod far less useful or necessary. The shape is also revised to add a good bit of space to clear their taller custom spring packs, which also lets the leaves nest into the shackle as the springs flatten. It’s a tried and true way to get good geometry from a leaf rear. Kudos to Stephen and Chris - it’s another heavy duty design that gives us still greater choices in how we setup a rear suspension.

This is the prototype, and production versions should be available from ORD, soon.

The rear suspension is about to come together.

I should have routed these earlier in the project. Junk is now a bit crowded. The rear routes through the proportioning valve, which is all cozy under the master, while the front is an unrestricted straight shot to the large front calipers.

It’s all bent, flared, and pretty much ready for install. Then, on to the rear suspension.

Fortunately, you can get these and keep your money. They’re just cheap line clamps from Allstar - great value add-ons while I fill a cart with Summit - and I just thread and tap whatever surface to M4x0.7.

The fasteners are metric? I think I use same clamps years ago on my blazer and it was 8-32.

Yeah, even the line separators from Earl’s are metric. You could easily swap. I just happened to have those taps, so no biggie.
