One Piece at a Time: My 1985 Diesel Suburban

Are you still able to use the factory hood latch? Does the intercooler cause any interference with the hood latch?
I’ve considered a self retracting latch like many SUV’s use for the back hatch. One that pulls itself in tight to the fully closed position.
The intercooler sits where the AC condenser used to, so it's out of the way of the hood latch, and I modified the latch to clear the condenser that's now in the forward location. I like that idea for the retracting latch. Might steal that for the charger.

Looks awesome.

If glass is out, isn’t it easier to tint loose? Or does the tint get messed up during install?
I also thought the tint would be better to apply before install, but both the tint guy and the glass installer - different people - said that it's better to tint in place. For the tint guy, he doesn't want to be responsible for a loose piece of glass. For the installer, he doesn't want to have to be responsible for messing up the tint during install. Sounds like each had learned from experience.

I thought my wallet was on fire with my truck recently, yours must be a record.
I'm mostly on budget, and will come back from SEMA having exhausted all of the sponsors' funding plus a little bit of my own. Tint, various Gucci fasteners, and the hood wrap are among the things that are coming out of my wallet. I'm fortunate to have sponsors that believe in and trust me, and I'm glad to have a day-gig that earns well enough that I can put extra details in the places I think make an impact without having to hold my hand out to yet another brand.

Leaving nothing on the table. This is a bigass business card.

So, after SEMA are you going to be taking this work of art back into the bush and putting some pinstriping on it?
It will go on trails again.

The next year is more likely a campaign of taking it to events, refining gear storage, and generally using it in support of the business. It’s the most valuable billboard I have, so it’s return to the trail will be within that context.

New bearing is in, and a few more things checked off the list.

Also, SCS 4x10 speaker grates and some sweet kickers. I’m not a sound guy, but my speakers were from 2001 and cracked up all over. No idea if kicker is any good, but I remember fellow youths in hike-thcool using them.

They just need to make it to 2044.

My dad got to see the truck for the first time yesterday.

DSC00815 - Copy.JPG

We dropped off wheels and tires and coilovers at Tribe, and I worked in a drive over to Gabe's. "Let's just see if he's working on it," I said. In reality, we had arranged for it to be out in the sun and lightly wiped down. As we drove up, my dad spied the truck before I did. He went over every detail, and his favorite part was how the doors fit (they never did fit correctly from factory) and how quiet they shut (lots of sound deadener) and the depth in the color.

I have looked forward to this moment for months, because it's just a truck until we gather around it.
