Overkillz Dune Truggy Build

I believe Joe Dirt said it best....

DAAAANNNNG!

Haha yes! 3 more hours till works done and we go pick it up. Already got way too many ideas brewing between us lol. I am gettin a mighty urge to start fabbing. Always wanted to try my hand at something like this. And the beauty is if it doesnt look good or turn out how we like... Cut it apart and start again lol.

Just a little nit pick. It's a C20, not a K20. K means 4 wheel drive. C is the body code for 2 wheel drive.

Are there any swap meets up there Adam? A set of hub caps should be easy to find.

Carry on.

Martin

Yah I meant C20. I was just excited lol.

Um, not that I know of. Idk where I would find them:dunno:

I was going to build something like this for the sand but a f150 with ttb and a bbc

Did you say you were going to make it 4wheel drive or just keep it 2.

My thought. Have a blast with it, and put as many seats in as possible. The swap meet I go to always have used or even new outdated 5 pt harness for $10 or so.

6 seats, all with harness, with a safe cage would be a kick in the ass for cruising around and scaring the Crap out of your friends.

hey adam when it comes time for hub caps get a hold me i'll get you hooked up, got a few sets around here i think. at least one for sure that came off my c30. this thing will be a blast at the dunes, just think simple and cheap and it'll make it even more fun :D

Thanks paul! And yah 2wd with paddles hopefully in the rear. If we cant get the paddles cheap, then some used boggers and cut every other lug off and groove em deep as possible. Itd be real sweet to make extended a arms for the front down the road. Like real wide :D

Maybe convert the front to 1/2 ton to save some weight.

Here is a fairly simple idea, and that front crossmember is focking big and heavy. More.desert style, bit would work for what your doing. Idea wise

Got it off race-dezert. It's about 10 down on my list of projects...lol.

But seriously, would love to have a full size 67-72 desert race truck. only seen a few

Heck yah! So whats your guys opinion. Was i thinkin chop the roof behind the a pillar and take box and front clip and cage it all, leaving the firewall with dash and have steering column, gauges, pedals, brake booster all mounted ready to go. Or should we leave the cabe, cage it and put seats in the back with cage, and just use the front fender outer skins and hang them on the front engine cage? Needs opinions. To me all cage and leave firewall and window only would save most weight, and be easiest to fix stuff and take less time.

Move the engine as far back as you can. I see jeeps here run sprint car tires in the sand. Not alot of tread but lots of surface area.

Holy crap! Called the local steel place and they want $166 for 24' of 1.75x.188 DOM. Fock that noise. Pipe sounds much better lol.

Yah well you don't need .188 dude. You need .120.

Tubing is made out of a much higher grade of steel than pipe, so you need the wall thickness for pipe, less wall thickness for tubing, and once again less wall thickness for chro moly. Same strength but lighter.

I think the pipe is a bad choice for you just cause its going to be heavy

If I was doing it, I would build the halo, and top main bars out of 1.75 .120, (6 points) that attach to the frame, then the rest out of the supports, seat bars, guessets and cross bracing out of a mix of 1.75 .090 and 1.5

Yeah, and more ideas.

I'd say skin the whole thing with the truck sheet metal. Keep the fire wall and maybe windshield frame. For ease of mounting steering, brakes, and overall protection.

Totally, anything thats not gonna get a hit ever ( like seat bars) out of .090.

Even going as far as using some 1" stuff for bracing and gusseting.

Yeah true Eric. He could prob even do the entire 6 point out of 1.75 .090

When I first got into circle track racing I thought it was crazy using .090 as per most circle track rules. After seeing lots of crashes and roll overs it holds up pretty well.

Most rules even in hill climb say under 4000 lbs 1.5 .090 is ok, and over 4000 use 1.75. I use that as a standard when I'm building stuff vs. Weight of the rig
