I have done cages in some time attack cars, basically SCCA type cars that really don't have a class.
Never used anything bigger than .090, saw the aftermath of a rollover at 100+ cage fared just fine, car not so much.

The key to building light is to really thing about everything.
Like for instance the windshield, it weighs I bet upwards of 30 lbs if not more. Plexi is lighter.
I have used seatbelt tabs that have a hole in them so you have to put them on the tube before you bend ( well its easiest) but allow you to use lighter gauge tubing for the seatbelt bars
