Overland trip: CK5 wheels the UP 2016 (trip report and pictures going up!)

Do you have it all written out on a piece of cardboard?

I would say a backpack is handy to have, but not mandatory. You want to carry some water, but could also be handy if we hit a site around lunchtime and want to eat a sandwich with a view or something like that.

That looks like a awesome trip! I sure hope it's a awesome success and is repeated next year. I would love to make this year but just don't trust my motor.

yeah, I guess you don't have to worry about that!

I could pull the distributor and replace everything under it, then toss the distributor too!

But nah, I love my BBC!

Guys, I'm in the Keweenaw looking at this sunset and thinking that I should just stay here a couple weeks and you can all meet me.

We're in the middle of planning a weekend camping trip. Starting tomorrow afternoon.

Maybe we should head further North than we were planning.

Ok then do it
How's the mosquitos?

Ok then do it
How's the mosquitos?

Really mild this year (in our location). No complaints at all compared to the last 3 years that we've lived up here.

I met more mosquitoes at the Oshkosh Airshow than I meet in an average evening hanging around our mosquito-breeding pasture.

Of course, I'm 3 hours away from Luke's location, it might be different up on the other lake. :dunno:

Skeeters are totally manageable in the day. After dark and early in the morning and they find any skin not covered in DEET. So just like Ethan said, they're not bad.

On to the teasers.

Now here's where getting Intel from a local ahead of time paid off. This is the entrance to the original trail:

He made it sound easy, but brushy, but it looks like I will break you all in to real 4-wheeling on the 1st day. I cut a lot of brush, so it's full-size ready, but this exit out of the river requires precise tire placement. There is a go-around with a bridge, but it's gated. Oh, and I got stuck on the trail to it anyway.

Initial itinerary:
Wed 17-Aug
Drive to midway camp - I will try to be in the UP a day early and if others are able, there will be an intermediate camp site, likely on Lake Superior.

Thurs 18-Aug
Meet at Adventure Mine, take mine tour, camp on-site. The underground tour is not a gimmick and is highly recommended. Also, the property is really cool to explore with trails, bridges, caves, boardwalks and open mine shafts. I've made arrangements with the owner to use their campground and also leave trailers and tow rigs there. This is basically an open field with a large fire pit and some water spigots. They keep porta-potties near the main parking, which is just a short walk from the campground.

Fri 19-Aug
Some all new dirt routes into Porcupine Mountains, where we'll catch some of the best and most famous views in Michigan. Then more trails up the West side of the Keweenaw, ending at a camp site that can't be forgotten.

Sat 20-Aug
Rockcrawling and more must see views in the Keweenaw. If the weather is right you'll be able to see Isle Royale (50 miles away). 4-wheeling on a 150-year old stagecoach road through old mining ruins. Camping at the proverbial "end of the world" - tip of the Keweenaw peninsula. An ultimate site for stargazing, the aurora and wrap-around sunrises.

Sun 21-Aug
Trail runs in the Keweenaw point with a view that's hard to believe (with hiking). 4-wheel on black sands that only exist up there. Possible stop at the highest waterfall in Michigan. Camp out on the ridge of the "Grand Canyon of the UP" and visit the falls hundreds of feet below. This is real wilderness that any forest lover will appreciate.

Mon 22-Aug
Short trail run to Adventure mine, with a stop for the group photo, then everyone heads home.

Luke, is there a final schedule, or are we just winging things? We're available from Wednesday through Monday (all day both days), but it's not clear that anything's happening on Wednesday.

We're 3.5 hours from Adventure Mine, we can pretty easily show up on Tuesday night. Or Wednesday night. Or Thursday morning. We're pretty flexible.

There is nothing official on Wednesday, I just mention it because some of us will start the trip on Wed. If schedules lined up, we could plan a camp in the East/mid UP. However, I think Zim has a place to stay on Wed and Mrs. Blue and I may actually cross the bridge on Tuesday.

I'm not sure if anyone else is coming up Wisconsin way or not.

So the official itinerary is to reach Adventure early enough on Thurs to do the tour of your choice. If it works out, we can tour together, but everyone has different schedule.

We could swing a campsite anywhere West of Marquette without significant backtracking. Not sure if we'd wanna head further East or not. We might just head up to the Keweenaw ahead of you guys. Plenty of things up there that are still on my list. Maybe Painsdale?

Is anyone else coming along, or is it still just 3 rigs?

i plan on being to adventure mine early wed afternoon...then leaving mon afternoon?
I want to spend some time at the Soo mon night/tues before heading home tues afternoon

I think my to do list is growing.

Fixed FOR last weeks trip:
  • Rear U-joint on rear shaft (was vibrating after dunefest)
  • Adjustment of rear wheels and re-seal O-rings
  • New wiring for refrigerator
  • Updated tablet mount
Fixed ON last weeks's trip:
  • Make HVAC blower work on all speeds (dirty relay contacts of course)
  • Stop Evap from freezing into a block of ice (adjusted pressure switch)
  • Get all the speakers to work (bad amp channel :frown1: )
  • Make wipers shut themselves off (re-faced contacts on park switch)
Fixed SINCE the last trip:
  • Rear brakes hanging up (full of mud - how'd this happen?)
  • PS door making a clunk
  • Turn signals not cancelling correctly (no parts required - steering wheel was centered differently than the turn signal cam )
New stuff found that needs to be fixed:
  • Front joint on front DS
  • 1 Axle shaft joint is loose
  • Slip joint on front DS is shot
  • Front DS CV starting to get loose
  • Speedometer cable making noise / bouncy needle, which keeps cruise control from working right (I know, the humanity :doah:)
  • 1 dash speaker has a broken terminal
  • New refrigerator plug keeps popping out
  • Pinging in 3rd on the freeway!

I'm finalizing plans, but Wednesday night is still up in the air for us. We may try to camp the Porkies or somewhere out there.

Not everyone coming has posted in this thread.

just give me a meeting point and a time frame for Wed afternoon....I'll be in St. Ignace Tues night.

What about the other list? You know...the other list. You're towing with the Cummins, right?

:haha:
