Patina Baja Buggy

Real VW heads, nice.

Check the part numbers on those heads, make sure they match.

My Dune buggy will let water in the cylinders if carb/air filter is not covered in the rain.
When I bought it, it had rained 2 days before, the engine was hydro locked. Pulled the plugs turned the crank, dropped the crankcase oil. Refill and run till warm. Several times. Managed to save it.

This engine come out of the parts car with the exhaust open and pointing straight up.

I forgot to remove the soup can at least once and lost it on the road. The open element K&N type filter wasn't helping either.

When I had a bobcat tail pipe, I used a holiday popcorn can. Poked to holes near the opening a bungee corded it to the engine.
A thick plastic shopping bag for the air cleaner with a Velcro strap to secure around base.
Ask how many a melted in Pismo a couple weeks ago lol.

Wow that shaft is complicated.
Yeah new jugs was a good call.
Any cylinder spacers between cylinder and case? Or in combustion chamber?

This project lingered a bit too long at my friend's shop but the suspension is finally 95% complete. We tossed a type 2-1700cc in so I can try and get it through a state patrol inspection tomorrow. Then it will go into my shop to spray the lizard skin before the cage is built.

Is the engine from a bus or newer generation?
I have never seen the engine stick out that far.
Did you move the rear axle and transaxle backwards to clear the tire?

Type 2 is a bus, so yeah bus engine. Iirc this bug or donor had 3 x 3 trailing arms, these will move the tires 3" wider track, and add 3" to wheel base. Fender cuts and larger tires normally help with 3" extra wheel base.

That makes sense now.
Looking at the rear tire, it looked like was clearing the fender too easy even though it's a big tire, so I assumed it was moved back.
