Phil's '88 Big Blue Build Thread

If that's the worst of the rust, I'd scotch brite the rust off and run it

You guys have any advice on a 2wd steering box? O'rielly's has one for about $153 plus $40 core charge I'm gonna have to swallow.

But the PSC ones on ORD are $350 to start! Crickey.

If you go big, its done...

Otherwise pull a 2wd sector shaft out of the junk yard and use your box until the cash fairy poops on your porch

The rust will wear off as soon as you start driving it.

Why eat the core, just give them the one you take off.

I guess I thought I couldn't turn in a 4WD box for a core on a 2WD box, but apparently they are pretty much the same.

You could swap shafts and return it. That would be a ****y thing to do for a free steering box

:haha:

picked up one from local yard, turned out it was recently rebuilt. If you want one rebuilt, benchworks here in phx does a good job.

I'll check the yards, but I think a lot of the squarebody stuff has been picked through.

I have a Benchworks box on my '70, really like how they set it up.

So...I have a question about the pinion assembly.

14b.PNG

Pinion yoke and nut are removed, and it slides in and out about 3/8" or so. Based on the drawing I'm thinking that no further disassembly is required and that removal involves just pressing it out of the housing. But I don't have a press, just a hammer and a bench. Before I start whapping on it, is there something I'm missing? Or is this pinion ready to push/bang out of the housing?

So, I got my Ruffstuff crossover kit. It has huge 1 ton 2234 tie rod ends. I know I need a 4" drop steering arm. Will I need to get it reamed to fit the tie rod?

Actually, I'm thinking I may have screwed up. The new passenger side steering arm is reamed for all 1 ton, which means I'll need new tie rod, and reaming driver's side, etc . . .

I don't think this is the path I wanted to go down.
