Phil's '88 Big Blue Build Thread

We were hiking deep in the Carson National Forest one time, and ran across a solo hiker. Stopped, talked, and in that conversation looked at his map - USGS style just like the above.

Well out of mobile phone range (his Google maps wasn't working), we explained how to read a map, and showed him how to use his compass, too.

Hope that fella made it out okay.

when I sat on the local Eagle Scout board I would test the candidates on these maps. I was Honored to meet some very impressive young men.

I like the old school topo maps. We did USGS surveys on U.S./Cantanadia border all the way from east glacier national park to the northwest angle of lake of the woods in 2002-2004 and those maps were all we had. It's crazy how much technology has advanced since then! I remember buying my first garmin GPS in 2003 and IIRC it was around $800 and all it did was showed me major roadways on an etch a sketch looking screen. Now I have an iPhone that I'm using to troll CK5 and talk a bunch of nonsense about old school "technology" when I could be using it to find basically any area I could ever dream of wheeling.

I'm expecting some Moab prep tech in here today...

Wow did the alert beep and wake you?

Is your frame solid at the box?

hahaha. I'm an early riser. Yeah, the frame is in good shape, I just want to make sure it stays that way. And I'm going to wash the truck. So, Monday there will be some dirt on the ground in the side lot at work. :o

Just install the rear Spartan locker, and new brake shoes in the back. I should probably try to find a full size spare, but the 31 inch one will do in a pinch.

Other things on the punch list:

Change the oil
Buy a fire extinguisher
buy some more spares
I have a miss at idle, I'm not sure what to do about that. Seems to run ok otherwise, hard to tell if I'm running on 7 or if it fires when I rev it up. The plugs all look like they are firing, so I don't know. Probably put a new set of plug wires on.
Buy a new tent

It will, especially since you will air down. So a 31 full of air is fine

Good, that will save me a couple hundred bucks, at least for now. Might not be fun to drive home like that, hopefully nothing will happen. The trails I chose don't look very tire hungry anyway.

Couple hundred bucks is already half way to having that Detroit paid for.

Oh, thats no problem, I could order the detroit now. I'm just procrastinating cutting off the crap from the axle, so there's no hurry.
