Phil's '88 Big Blue Build Thread

Hydraulic assist.

Martin

Well, I didn't mean it's difficult to turn it, but it just seems to want to go straight. Hydro assist makes it easier to steer, but doesn't really help it actually, turn, correct?

This is all coming from my Ely trip. The mountain had 42 switchbacks, and jeeps that had the front end locked always had to do multipoint turns. One guy unlocked his, and it seemed to make a huge difference.

Correct...

Hydro works good at overcoming the tension fighting against steering with the hubs and sometimes axle locked.

Case in point though, ktmoutfront has no front locker, does have hydro. Unless you start hunting chunky rocks out there in the desert, maybe it's not cost effective for you

Yeah, I'll start with the rear detroit in the 14 bolt, go 8 lug on the front for a start. I can always add something to the front if later I think I need it. Maybe leaving the front open will help the 10 bolt live longer too. lol.

Traction > all else.

Martin

This is no doubt true, but I haven't even gotten stuck yet with 2 open diffs. Which probably means I need to step up my game. But I'll start with a rear locker and go from there.

Lockers get me in trouble. When I had open diffs I couldn't go where I can now (obviously) and when I got stuck it was usually easy to get out...

I have this same sentiment with my Dana 44, i want to lock it but I have a tendency to mash the skinny pedal a little too often

Try a powr lok. Can be found in trashtionals. I have one in my D44, works way better than a posi, but it steers

Not that D44 parts help Phil much...

I thought at least some of the parts were interchangeable? Guess not locker parts. lol

Easy swap in. More locker choices (posi & other options too) than the 10b just in case an 8 lug one is available
