Pics of my Dana 60 14BFF Install

Tech, your trick along with turning the pinion makes it pop out like it doesnt even have preload. U DA MAN!!! I have already moved it over 13 thou away from the pinion and I am starting to get close. It will prolly take another 5 thou to get it where it needs to be. Do you shoot for .008 on your backlash?

Yes .008, Does the patteren still look good or are you going to need to move the pinion

Dont know yet. I am at 4 thou on the backlash now. Gonna get it where I want it then ck the pattern.

Actually if I split the difference in the middle of the dana specs that I found on thier website, It would be 6 to7 thou. They list spec at 004 to 009.

6 or 7 would be good, you just don't want to much or to little.

Ok, I finally got it at 7 thou with the preload tight enuff that I can barely bang it in there with a rubber mallet with everything lined up. Checking pattern now.

From the pics it doesn't look bad to me. Looks to be in the middle of the gear.

Ok, here is what I wound up with.

Stock set up:
.062 shim on the ring gear side
.036 shim on the other side
.098 total shim (I thought this would be the same when I finished the PL

Spice Power Lok Installed:
.051 shim on the ring gear side
.059 shim on the other side
.110 shim total

I wound up after the final bearings were installed at a backlash of .008. It varied between .0075 and .0085 cking it at multiple points. Im happy with it. The pattern looks like the pictures I have seen online and in the richmond video that I got from Randys today. I feel really good about my bearing preload too. I put another .010 on the non ring gear side to my last set up bearing measurement which was snug. If feels just like it did before I tore it down. The gear pattern looks like it did before I tore it down. The axle was new and I had only locked it in in the driveway so the gear pattern was still there. I think for an absolute perfect pattern, the backlash should have been about a thou and a half less backlash and that would have put the pattern a little deeper. I bet I did a better job than the goofs at Four Wheel Parts here in town. I talked to them about changing the gears in my duramax dually. They quoted me $600.00 to change the front and rear....which I thought was a killer deal. I walked back in the install area and all the guys looked like they were stoned and couldnt pass the high school proficiency exam. It was friggin nasty...I asked them if they had a fixture that would reach deep enuff to set the pinion depth in the 11.5" and nobody even new what I was talking about. I got the stuff to do it now! I guess the next project will be to go to 5:13's now that I got the stuff to do it with!

I saw it looked like it could go a little deeper, but its not bad at all, better than alot I have seen. If it looks the way it came out you did real good.:waytogo:

Thanks Teck! I really appreciate all of your expertise!!;)

I am as happy as a freed slave!! Took the burb out for testing and it works like a dream!! No gear noise or vibration what so ever! I put it in 4 wheel drive and ran it up to 70 with the hubs unlocked..smooth as silk with NO gear noise. Locked the hubs....hit a flat straight backroad and ran it up to 65mph no gear noise and no vibration at any speed. It was worth all the money for the tools and all the work. I know how to set up gears now!! Thank god I am no longer a hostage to all the jackleg mechanics that set up gears around here. That was my last mechanical hurdle to do myself. As long as I have my health, I can fix and build 100% of my old school chit.

Good to hear it all worked out,and now you are free!

Most guy don't have the paisions to work through getting gears set up right, they think if it is close it will work. Seen way to many that way not last.

Me too. I would really like to do a rear with a ratio change just to make sure I have it down. I have been telling my buddy that I bought the burb from about all the gear stuff. He is ready for me to do a pair for him with a ratio change for free with warranty.:D I told him...."I dont know about all that". I really do want to do the rear to see how it turns out. What is the going rate for a complete build with a ratio change on a 10 bolt front and a 14b semi floater rear? Labor only. I would love to recoup some of my tool labor.

I would have to ask my friend but I thing he get like $450 to $550 on most axles, but that might included a setup kit, seals and oil.

Don't do anything free with a warranty, that will bit you in the ass, Murphy's law. Just charge him something or do it free just to help him out.

Oh I know. I just want to know how much work im going to do $ wise if it does work. That way I can hang it over his head for our next deal!:D
