Pics of roof racks on Burbs/Blazers??

16922008.jpg

Nice rack (and other stuff on the site). I am going to build my own, much like the rack on the burb above (lights and all), but I am concerned with the mounting aspect. The rest looks straight forward. any pics of mounts would be great.

So, is there or isnt there a gap?

You have to have something between the rack and the roof or else you are asking for trouble.

there’s an gap, about an 1 1/2" between the roof and rack. I bought the sub with it already on there so I don't know how it was built. It's pretty solid.

I'm curios why do you say I'm asking for trouble?

Where the rack mounts to the roof... if there is not rubbor or anything inbetween them.... it will rub and wear away the paint, then metal on metal, then rust, etc. See what I am trying to say?

And if you wheel it hard... body flex will make this happen even faster.

OK I see what your saying now. I never thought of that. I'm going to be taking it off next month to build the rails and paint I'll put some rubber or something between the mounts and body.

They make 'sheet' rubber that you could cut perfect, just a tad bigger than the mounting surface, that would work great.

Ever flexed a Sub? It's amazing how little those bodies distort.

I did it a different way. I used big door hinges at each of my 6 attachment points. There's some RTV under the part of the hinge screwed thru the roof and into the structure right under the sheetmetal just above the windows. I changed the pins to 5/16" bolts. So now I can pull those 6 bolts and remove the rack if need be.

The rack in the pic in question is a commercial unit. I nearly bought an ex News Reporter Sub that had the same rack on it. Any body flex would be accounted for in the bending of the base brackets. Not the best plan, but given how little those bodies distort it's probably a very workable solution.

But, if the rack doesnt flex, and the body does even just a hair... with nothing between them... not good.
