Potent Rodent

New built engine, EFI, 4L80 transmission, t-case, brakes, hydroboost, tires/wheels and more!
I guess all the horsepower is moving to Colorado.

Actually yes....

Long story but the Chevelle turbo SBC kit was not going to work in the K5 due to fitment issues. Headers and turbos were ok (except for hitting the brake booster) but not the down pipes and other parts. My fabrication guy kept putting me off on doing some custom downpipes and I just got fed up with trying to make the turbos work along with all components that it still required. SO... for now, going naturally aspirated and getting the thing going ASAP since we might be moving to a different house soon with a bigger garage! Got the Edelbrock SBC MPFI system. Its basically plug and play and uses Android through Bluetooth for tuning and dialing in it. No professional dyno tuning required. Its getting pretty damn close where I can actually start it. I got my list down to 35 tasks. Some are small tasks so I'm hoping to have this driving and on the road by December. I'm a little discouraged that no turbos are going on but maybe down the road that will change.

Got the new Edlebrock manifold on. I was hoping to use the existing intake but the injectors were different.

Edelbrock ECU mounted where stocker was. Still need to zip tie the wires up out of harms way from heater cables.

Got this cool hydraulic crimper to make my battery cables.

nothing like a good crimper tool . this was my dads from back in the 1970's . T&B crimper for all the way down to 4O wire . there as big as bolt cutters .

and nice choice on the edelbrock unit . long story with me but not happy with holley and there customer service the way they treat you after they get your money . few others on here looking at the edelbrock and 1 guy running it and reporting on it in the injection section .

nice to see this getting done .

Yeah Holley is hit or miss. Their new EFI systems are way too much these days. I really like how simple Edelbrock made this kit. The only thing missing was a coil you have to buy. The tablet they sell extra is pretty basic and its easy to find any Android tablet or phone cheaper.

Thats a neat crimper! Its nice now having professional looking battery terminals. The only thing with my crimper is it was not big enough for the really large 1/0 AWG ends. So I took the smallest die in the kit 16 gauge, clamped in the vice and drilled with a matching large bit to accommodate the larger copper lug (modified die shown in picture).

ya i got 3 die's for mine . 2 = 4 sizes each and 1 = 2 size's .

saved people so much money over the years with these fixing and making nice cables . they also built a lot of fire trucks back in the day .

story i was told by my dad was the guys in the electric wiring section wanted to know just how strong the crimp / solder joint was when done . they took a 20ft length of 1O or 2O and crimped and soldered a lug in place . clamped it in the vise bolted to the bench then the bench was bolted to the floor . 10 guys pulling couldnt get it to move .

the solder job was easy for them . crockpot type bowl with molten solder in it all the time . flux the end / crimp it to the cable / dunk it in the molten solder / let cool and cover in 3m tape .

This one has 9 dies. Mostly just need the larger ones. Its stupid to use this on 14 gauge crimps.

A little update.

-Got the fuel lines finished and ran along with new filter
-Large Aeromotive fuel regulator installed (had it laying around from my old race car)
-Reversed the input on the fuel rails so its in back now. Crossover is at the front, then to FPR in back. Rails are setup in series.
-Heater hoses done. Used -14AN and -12AN. -14AN is a weird size and had to use a push lock fitting at the engine. Goes on nicely on the 3/4 heater core pipe. Same with -12AN on 5/8.
-Had to T off my large vacuum port with some old brass fittings I had laying around. Don't care for how this looks. I wish Edelbrock would give one more port on the bottom of the TB.
-Spark plug wires installed. Still need to get a some coil wire ends since the one it came with does not work. Used some cheap wire looms to keep them off the headers.
-Temp sensor for stock gauge cluster is 1/2" NPT size and won't fit in the AFR heads. Found temp sensor 1T1008 that has 3/8 NPT and similar ohm readings (confirmed in hot water).
-Got the radiator support back on the front. No more easy access to engine. This one is a GM support. My old 89-91 support was made in China that was thinner and had some cracks.
-Going with the GMC grill this time around. Got the parts, just need to install them just like everything else thats waiting to be installed.
-4L80 Trans Lines, cooler, flexible dipstick is next for install along with 30 other things that need finished. List of stuff to do is getting smaller...

I have quite the collection of braided stuff and fittings from my old race car build so figured I should use it. Had to get a few items to match such as the -20 radiator hoses which SUCK to put together.

there is a guy i another forum that has found the gm sensor for temp gauge in the head can be turned all the way down to fit in the ls engine hole in the head .he even offers this as a service with your sensor or a new one he can supply .

so if you want to and can just turn your sensor down to the smaller size and install it .

I saw someone did that on his but did not know another guy was offering to do the service. Thats awesome! I thought about taking to my local machine shop but I hate what they charge me for simple things like this. I heated up some water so it was steaming and both old and new sensors read identical on my ohm meter. Let me try this and if for some reason it doesn't read correctly I will hit you up. I found this handy info digging for info on the temp sensor. I found the 3/8 sensor on Rock Auto for $3!

If you have a 3/8 NPT sender hole. 1979 and 1980 are odd ducks. They could have either 3/8" or 1/2" Tang senders depending on what engine was installed.

Getting close to starting this bastard.... Just need more time to finish the little things...

Finally got a good Hydroboost core that I'm going to send out to Vanco to get ported. Hillbilly Wizard had the parts from a low mileage CUCV. I already had the Hydroboost pedal alone but decided to get this since it included the mount with the return spring. Not going to use the lines or the master but its nice he ships all the parts you need if you want to stick to a budget.
