Power Window Idea <--- IT WORKS

I'm contemplating doing this. As I'm getting older I find myself more and more lazy and not wanting to dick with manual windows, especially if we can rebuild and restore the power windows to work well.

That said I'm HORRIBLE with electrical stuff. Can't make head or tails of that diagram. Someone needs to either make this kit or just be willing to charge me money to make it. Otherwise I'll fry myself, the truck, or both.

could this be done to the tailgate window

Read my much earlier post on the tailgate. Mine is still working fine with the relays I installed in 1987. Might be time to replace the window tracks and the roller wheels though after all these years. The switch on the dash still drives the motor directly and works fine for me too.

Well, if the relays click, then you are halfway there. When the relays click, they are switching.
If the motor does not move, then the power or ground is hooked up wrong to the relay contacts.
Or the motor leads are hooked up wrong.
The two motor leads have to be hooked to pin 30, one on each relay.
The hot lead must be hooked to pin 87 on both relays.
And the ground must be hooked to pin 87A on each relay.

You might double check that with a meter.

NOTE, only one relay should click in each direction. If they both click, then the motor will not move.

you have no idea how frustrated i am. I have unhooked and troubleshot all day. Only one relay is clicking when i go respectively up or down. its not the motors b/c when i wire it back up to the original config they work (slow). its not the relays b/c ive gone through like 3 dif sets. I've even hooked up the power and ground directly to the battery and still just clicking. with so many people doing this successfully i feel like a complete idiot.

Hang tough dude. We'll get through it.
Do you have a meter or test light?

If so, then one step at a time. When everything is right but it doesn't work, thats when they call me in. You gotta verify every step, even if you know its right.

First, does your relays have the right numbers on the terminals? If not, are they arraigned like the drawing on post 34?

We have to be sure we are on the same page as to which terminals are which.
I'm gonna make a bunch of assumptions here, if one of them is wrong, just let me know.
Assuming that you can tell which terminal is which, and you have a meter or test light, check for power on pins 87 of both relays.

Hit the window switch up and down. You should continue to see power on both pins.

If so, then put the light or meter on pin 30 of either relay. Hit up and down.
You should see power in one direction on one relay.
Put the probe on the other pin 30. You should see power in the opposite direction.

Then, put one probe, or the ground clamp of the test light to a hot wire and put the other on pin 87A of one relay.
You are testing for a ground here.
You should see 12 volts or the light should light.
Test both 87As while going up and down with the switch.
You should see ground all the time.

Then, put the probe on pin 30. You should see ground on both pin 30s on both relays.
On each relay, the ground should go away in one direction, opposite on each relay.

By this time, one of those tests should have failed. If not, then make sure the two motor wires are on pins 30.

NOTE, from what I hear, if you are trying to do this to the back tailgate window, it will not work, but the doors should do fine.

Let me know what you find.

You gotta verify every step, even if you know its right.

1.) Fordum, you are the man.
2.) This subscription is always worth it.
3.) It ended up being a $1.32 splitter that was interrupting my power source. I just took for granted that it wasn't impeding the flow from the junction block :doah:.
4.) Windows are definitely quicker especially when the trucks running.

All Right!

Glad you got it.

It took me years to finally get it drummed into my head.
When everything is right, but it doesn't work, everything ain't right. Go back and check the basics.
Especially the stuff that you absolutely know is right.

I'm looking to do this mod in the coming days. Any suggestions on the size wire to use?

All the same gauge, or different gauge for different connections?

I would use 8 or 10 for the battery and ground lines if you can route it. If you are going to use 14 or smaller wire, you lose half of the advantage of the mod. I also recommend pulling the power from the distribution block or battery. There is no stiff source of power under the dash (I have number on all this some pages back).

Assuming that you are putting the relays in the doors, it is fine to use the stock wire from the relay to the motor.

I just finished the driver's side window, and wow what a difference. It's got to be 2 or 3 times faster. I did use 10 GA wire for both ground and power. The power goes from the distribution block under the hood to under the dash and splits to the driver and passenger side.

Thanks Jason4X4 for the idea, and Blue85 for the wire advise!

Wow - I tagged this thread 03/08/2009.

I'm doing this mod now and thought I'd offer up a diagram of Jason4x4's mod.

I'll post feedback once I'm done.

FEEDBACK:

All I can say is wow. (Of course) I should have done this long ago. The difference is well worth the effort. I went from slow windows with dead seals to new seals and windows that couldn't get it up. Now, they operate better than my 2000 vehicle - And that's with new seals !

I'm definitely going to order the lower bump stops for the window regulators though - The motors seem to have a lot of power behind them now.

DEFINITELY worth the effort. Thanks Jason4x4 !

This is awesome. Just put new seals and felt in and the windows would barely move. Did this and now it's ZOOM! Fingers beware!

yeah, this is on my hitlist for this weekend myself...

Im about to do the same thing too, just need to get all the relays and some connectors, done run outa them already.

I always have plenty of electrical stuff, I've just had lathe mania lately... :haha:

hopefully it'll be above freezing tomorrow and I'll get motivated for this one...

Il probably do it next weekend, my Sub got kicked outa the garage, its finally snowing here, and this is my weekend with my kids, and I doubt they wana be in the snow all day, lol

Wow, i didn't realize so many planned on joining the new years window mod resolution party.

I'm planning on doing this tomorrow too :)

Good luck all.

I tried this about a year ago, and while testing it I shorted something out, and now the driver side doesnt work at all. With or without the relay. I think I checked the fuse and it was good. Did I toast the motor? It was just a quick pop.
