Project 82 TCBF -10.13.9 - progress!!!

Alright guys, did a little more thinking last night. What do you guys think about just regearing my rear 10bolt, and keeping the posi unit in there? This way I can stay 6 lug, and use the wheels I bought a while back. I mean, i`m not a hard wheeler, and I`ve seen a 10b rear go through some pretty rough situations (Chevy305) and has held up well....I could run that untill I could get a 14bsf, and keep it 6 lug..Whatcha think?

For the unistrut you can get some spring nuts and use 1/4-20 button head (rounded) allen bolts to fasten the sheet metal down. That way its easily removeable and you dont have to have anyone hold the nut on the other side while tightening. Spring nuts should be available for any electrical supply house.

If you're not a hard wheeler, I'd stay 6-lug. IMO the wheel choices are more attractive. But that's just me, I can't bring myself to wheel my rig because it's a showpiece

Yeah, along with the unistrut, came a box full of the spring nuts and 3/8ths bolts....all free of charge:D

Well, it`s not all about wheel choices...I just think it`ll hold up, as like I said, I`m not a hard wheeler..I think, I`m going to just regear my rear to 4.56 and keep the posi unit in there....

is the front axle you are getting 6 or 8 lug?
It`s an 8 lug, but I could easily just swap the 6 lug stuff of my current axle to the new one, that way I can use the wheels I got, just incase I can`t get those 8 luggers....

you need to look at costs. how much will it cost you to regear your current axle? how much will it cost to buy a 14 bolt, u-bolts, spring plates, brakes for the 14 bolt. that type of thing. in the end it may be cheaper to regear. if it is close I would go with the 14 bolt. Because the ability to upgrade more in the future is greater. if its hundreds different then you have your answer.

This is a sickness. We all have it in varying stages. you will never stop changing your mind. The only way to stop changing your mind is have limitless money. Then you can build the truck you want instead of trying to build as much as you can on a budget. your truck will never be done. you need to accept these things.

why not buy the front axle. buy the 14 bolt. run what you have while you slowly rebuild both axles. bolt them in at the same time. seld the old axles. there are people that will buy them. I know that when I first lifted my truck if someone was selling axles with 3.73 gears and a posi I would have jumped on them. my truck came with 2.72's.

I think that the gears thenselves are alittle more than $150 plus the install kit at about $80ish with all shims, seals, and bearing needed. If you really want more insurance go for chromo axel shafts for about $100 each. And if you want to replace any other parts then thats just more $$.

I have 1 chromo shaft, I think for now I will just buy the other chromo shaft until I can get the 14bsf.

Are you voluntering (sp?) Glenn?:D

Well I know I could help out with the rear end, having learned from my own mistakes when I regeared my own...

But ya no problem...

Just to make it go a hell of a lot easier, access to a hydrolic press is prefered. Or if there is a machine shop around the corner from your house...

Well, my buddys dads` work has a press...wonder if we could use it.....

More food for thought....worth swapping the Lockright from the front axle into the rear, and putting the posi up front?

that may not work. fronts can be 28 or 30 spline as well as the rear. I have installed front lockrights but never a rear. I don't know how they deal with the c-clips but that may also present a problem.

Well, my rear is 30...not sure about the front I`m getting..

Well thats a more common setup with a rear locker and posi front. I would prefer that setup as apposed to the other way around.

But yeah just be aware of the axel shaft splines.

If they are the same spline, is it possible?
