Project 82 TCBF -10.13.9 - progress!!!

Hey Ben, good deal on the carport/tent thing! :D What do the bases of the poles look like? Is there a plate or is it just square tube? Also how thick is the concrete that you want to put anchors into? There are lots of different style concret anchors but it will depend on thickness of the slab, I would anchor all the posts to be safe. -Josh
 
the four corners are L shaped, and the middle legs are just straight. Not sure the thickness of this slap, been there for 50+ years :crazy:
 
Lag shields go into a pre-drilled hole in the concrete. They spread out as the Lag bolt is spun into them. I'm not real good at getting pics from the net, but I will see if i can find some. Maybe at Home depot or Lowes? The shields are much stronger than a Tapcon or plastic anchor.
 
I just used a bunch of 8" long galvanized spikes and with a concrete drill bit, just drilled and hammered them into the concrete. Then used nylon rope to tie it to the spikes. We use these spikes at work for anchoring inflatables in the wind and it works.

that is exactly what i was going to recomend as well. i would anchor all the posts to even out the forces put on it from the wind. i will look for some pics as well.

is this the same thing your buddy used that he had ripped out of the ground?

Hmm, I'll look into this too. How long does the hole need to be drilled?


I'm hoping to make my way over to Home Depot today, so I'll see what they have....
 
drilled the hole 8" or so but a slightly smaller diameter so it would be a nice tight fit. Didn't even use a hammer drill, just a corded drill.

did it take forever without the hammer drill? I don't believe I have one, but I may be able to borrow one....
 
Not really, at the job site i can do probably 10 or so without the battery dying but its mostly blacktop which is waaaay softer. If you have a corded drill it will be no problem. Depends on the concrete really. Im guessing 30 seconds per hole.

The really long spikes are hard to get, the shorter ones are in a box at home depot.
 
Do they make the spikes with the eyelet at the end? Guess I better get in gear and head to homedepot soon :crazy:
 
not that ive seen, but they have a cap on the end. That's why i make that knot to hold the rope on there, and i always forget how to make the knot until i look at an old one. The nylon rope is hard to find at home depot, but its there and you will need to burn the ends of the rope to keep from fraying.

Im also not sure if they sell the spikes separately or not, i hope they do because a box is like 50lbs.
 
Is there a name for the best type of not to hold in on the head of the spike? I can just see it loosening up and just coming off the spike :crazy:
 
I don't think there are more then one type, but i could be wrong. If you do a good knot, they dont come off. Ive got a couple sets that are 10 years old and still together. I just read on the side of the box that they offer in stainless steel as well, hmmmm for your neck of the woods, id go that route as galvanized will eventually rust. The company on the side of the box is Grip Rite Nails. hth

No, He used T-posts at each corner of a 20' x 18' garage in a high wind area. Not enough! I'm loading some pics right now and will post them in a few minutes.

Here you go. Pic 1 is a lag and shield. The shield is a little small,but it was all I had on my service van. Pic 2 just shows you how the lag will spread as you run a lag into it. The pen is in the wrong end, but I think you get the idea.

Like the wise woman once said, I would go with the biggest, longest ones you can find.:D

I would use one at least every 4-6 feet or so. Maybe 4" x 1/2" depending on the depth of the slab. I would also get a couple good concrete bits and a hammer drill will make the drilling go much faster.

Thanks alot for all the help guys! I'm trying to see if I can borrow a hammer drill right now, then I'll head to the Home Depot and checkout what they got...
