Project Camo Reaper - Brake lines made - post #144

Don't you think they will be kind of annoying when taking the wheels on and off?

Martin

I was worried about it a little but nothing a long extension and a pair of gloves won't take care of. If someone ever tries to steal them they will be easy to find. They will be the ones with the bloody hands and forearms :haha:

Got the 14b brakes all stripped off today. Brake shoes were wore down to the rivets. Bought new drum, shoes and all springs/retainers. I don't plan on ever going back inside there for anything so why not make it all new. Had to order everything so I took advantage of Autozone again and the gift card offer.
Should have everything by Tuesday which is good timing since it will be back in the 50's.
Guess I need to beat the lugs bolts out and the bearings and races out while I wait..tomorrow. Getting ready for some UFC now

You should look into the Propane type of refridgerators like RV's have. Propane tank could then also be used for cooking in bad weather. Dual and triple purpose is the way to go for a camping/hunting rig.

I have a small 2 burner camp stove. Might look into a small fridge but chances are it's going to be cold in the mountains here in Colorado

Got the wheel studs press out of the hub/drum assembly no problem. Didn't have to beat the hubs loose from the drum either. Next I got the inner seal, bearing, and race out. The snap ring that hold the outer bearing is kicking my ass :mad1:. There is no raised tabs on the snap ring like they show in Billavista's 14 bolt bible or like I've see on some Youtube videos. It's basically a partial V-notch in the ring. The closest I've been to getting it out is pliers in the grooves and squeeze it enough to get a pick behind the snap ring. Then I can get a flat bade screwdriver in there to twist it. Both hubs have the same snap ring.

Here's a pic

Thoughts?

I need to get a longer pair of needle nose maybe. The pair I have is short and sits inside the hub. My big ass hands can't fit inside to grab the pliers..

Yeah looks like you need some long ones. Those can be a bitch.

Or maybe work around in a circle and place a small flat tip behind it

That's what I was trying until my hands started cramping. Not only is it hard to get a hold of, it's a very strong clip.

VICTORY!!!!
That was one of the most difficult things I've had the displeasure of doing. Was able to get my small pair of needle nose on there enough toget a small screwdriver behind it. I found a small pick with a big hook on it, Once I got the hook around the snap ring, I clamped some vice grips on it to pull it up...then I was able to work 2 screw drivers around and keep pulling up on the pick. The second hub was much easier. I hope to never have to replace those again

Got my goodie box from ORD today. Still waiting on another package from them but not until the end of the month. Great timing cause I won't have my wheels until then. Also waiting on my buddy to send me some of his extra stuff:
14b Detroit locker
crossover steering
2" wheel spacers
maybe more

and oh yeah...it's free. I'm sure I will pay for it sometime down the road though

Why not go to disk brakes?

Im liking the build, keep up the good work!

The 14b has been given new life with new bearings, races, seals, brakes shoes, springs, and wheels cyclinders

Plans for the weekend are:
Reinstall wheel studs into the hub/drums on the 14b.
Cut off factory shock mounts from 14b
Grind off spring perches

That will finish the 14b until I get it in and decide where to put perches and shock mounts

Will begin tearing into the D60. It gets:
New bearings, seals, brakes, and kingpin bushings/springs

Plan to head to U-Pull & Pay Saturday. Looking for F250 shock towers, 2wd steering box, rubber floor/carpet

The weekend didn't pan out as planned but I did get a few things done. Got the 14b all buttoned up as far as brakes, bearings, races, and seals go. Cut off the old shock mounts and spring perches. The perches were a MF'er to get off. I went through 3 cutoff wheels and 2 flap wheels.

I found out that 1Tonmudder bought most of my old K5 from the 2nd owner after I sold it. I bought back my old 14b diff cover, axle truss and anti-wrap bar. I have to modify the truss where it bolts to the pinion. It would have fit but the DIY4X Guardsman interferes. Just need to weld in a 1" spacer and its all good
