Project MULE - Expedition build on a 1991 1500 4x4 Suburban

I'm not debating your results, just hard to imagine how the charcoal canister could affect milage like that as it is a fairly passive device. It really just absorbs the gas vapors from the tank, then the motor sucks them back out when running.
Perhaps your canister had a leak that was causing a vacume leak:dunno: and throwing off your milage. Either way, 15+mpg is great. I really hope others determine it is the canister.
 
If the purge valve was bad it would create in essence a vaccum leak. The vapors do help for more ignition but yeah this is such a non power related device that it doesn't make sense but its the only thing i changed. Across the board when I did research it all I found was that aside from emissions it can effect mileage.

This is why I will be doing a few more drives and check mileage again.

Oh sure, I sell my 'Burb less than a week ago and now you start in with the sliders!! I will take a set for the new build I am contemplating

Those look great :waytogo: Well, if you do take those to production I might be interested in a set for the Polar Bear as long as they are a bolt on. I'm not into the weld on type sliders or any slider that requires body panels to be cut or modified. I like the idea of sliders, just don't want to molest the truck to get them on. Yours look perfect so far. Anxious to see them on your burb.
 
Larry These will have two tubes going to the frame mounted through 2" bushings and then they will be bolted to the pinch seam below the doors. No modifications otherwise. This is a pretty common design slightly modified for the chevy frame on body.
 
nice idea. i'm not too keen on cutting the rockers out of my truck to install 2x4 tube, this looks like a solid setup. i wonder if over time, flexing between the frame and body will cause any unwanted issues. i can see them stiffening up the truck a little, which is cool with me.
 
In regards to the charcoal canister replacement and fuel mileage bump

Zip, zero, zed, zilch, nadda, nope and HELL NO!

Zero mileage change. I think didn't get the correct mileage off the gps.
 
More work on the sliders today. I have them fully welded up. I had the tubes bent to far apart so they go right to the end. I was planning to taper the ends for better angles so now I will add on a 2" piece at each end that has the taper.

I ended up with some spatter because I had the tip at such a sharp angle against the surface. I am still trying to get better at welding tube and round edges.

Picked up the rest of the hardware and metal yesterday for the slider project. Hoping to get to it this weekend. I need to get some work on the wife's daily driver first.
 
I took a quick break and tossed together a wire rack. I got sick of having the spools just laying around.

At first I thought that was a floor-mounted rack with huge spools on the bottom:eek1: then I saw the wall plug then it all shrank to its proper scale.
