Project MULE - Expedition build on a 1991 1500 4x4 Suburban

I got bored and decided to add a another item to my trail tools.

Emergency Battery Welding Kit

Requires 3 batteries wired in series to get 36 volts.

All cable is high strand flexible 2ga cable
10FT positive lead
7FT grounding lead
(2) 20" "jumper" cables to go between batteries
(2) 5 packs of vacuum sealed 1/8" 6013 general purpose welding rod
Flip up protective welding goggles. The lens has been changed to for arc welding.
as usual all of the terminal ends are sealed with adhesive filled heatshrink.

Ok well I think with proper battery connections and good cabling its a for sure thing that on the smaller jobs 24v (or two batteries) is all that would be needed. I would say have 3 batteries at the ready if you feel its going to be 3/16" or thicker.

That's awesome man! I can see a battery setup in the back of the truck being nice for this, with all the equipment stored in a tool box. How much welding can you do before the batteries are dead? I'd hate to fix my rig and lose track of how long I'd been going and not be able to start the truck because of it.
 
I have never been able to find an answer and I dont think there is one. WAY too many variables in play for how much you can do before they are dead. Type and age of batteries, how much of a charge was in them. are you getting good strikes, are the rods damp and so on.

It is my guess that you should be able to fix what whatever broke in two to 3 sticks and get you home or maybe keep going.

That makes sense. And yeah if you can 3 sticks out of them and still keep going you should be fine.

That's what part of the video was to show. That was half of the 3rd stick and I grabbed the weakest battery out of the three and tossed it right into the truck to show it will still start.

Hey Thanks guys. It's been slow taking off but we are getting there.

Anyways, its been a little while so I thought I would post up the work I did over the weekend. I finally got the lights mounted and wired on the roof rack. I had to make room for the upcoming 48" bar so I moved the 21" Hawks to the sides as side lights. I also add some tabs on the back for some backup lights and mounted up a pair of LED brake lights.

Some of these were taken on "the fly" with instagram so that's the reason for the different looks in some.

Awesome! Can't wait to see what shots you get with this. And the roof rack is looking good too, I want to see it mounted. I'm thinking of doing the same thing with some red LED's like you have for extra tail/brake lights.:waytogo:
